The Lady Devils soccer team won a 1-0 game against the Cherokee Braves at their home field on Thursday, March 23, and then won 9-0 against Tri-County Early College on Monday, March 27.

The Thursday game didn’t have a great wealth of scoring, but the players ran the length of the field, occasionally bumping into one another or shoving others to the ground.

“It was a very physical game, but our girls did a great job of keeping it together for the full 80 minutes,” said Head Coach Scott Cline.

The Lady Devils’ lone point – the only one scored all game – came just four minutes into the game. After that, the teams battled for the defenses and the Devils were able to hold their 1-0 win.

The Player of the Game was Rose Carson.

“Rose really saved us numerous times in this game,” said Cline. “She has really stepped up her play over the past few weeks.”

On Monday, the Devils saw Isabella Walker scoring for the first time this season just three and a half minutes into the game. Further goals were scored by team-ups between Walker, Mya Burrows-Kurr, Mahala Bird and others and the first half ended with the Devils at 5-0.

The second half of the game saw further goals scored, with Karena Cline finding Anna Gray for a goal thirty seconds after the start of the second half. Gracie Sutton entered the field as a field player after being a goalkeeper, and scored a goal in under 10 seconds, according to Head Coach Scott Cline. The final goal was scored with 21 minutes to go – Kathryn Roland found Cora Watkins for a goal.

Gray and Savannah Currie led the defense, each of them with two clears/steals. Roland was Player of the Game, with Cline saying she “stepped it up in the game and did a great job at distributing the ball.”

Today will see the Lady Devils taking on the Murphy Bulldogs at 6 p.m. for another conference match up at Murphy High School. Swain is 5-0 in conference play as of Monday, while Murphy is 4-1.
