The town of Bryson City has managed to keep utilities work on pace even in spite of inclement weather this week, along with some other unexpected problems.

At the weekly meeting for residents about the work, held at Anthony’s Pizza on Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 2 p.m., Town Engineer Nate Bowe said workers had encountered a fiber optic service line near Depot Street that needed a repair Friday, Aug. 25, but were able to fix it without the train being out of service.

“If you’re not hitting something, you’re not doing construction,” he said.

Bowe also offered an update on an issue from last weekend when the road was closed in spite of promises that it would be open for traffic on weekends.

He said they unexpectedly had not had a truck available to move the gravel blocking the road, so they had to leave Everett Street closed last weekend. But Bowe said they would make sure it was open for the upcoming Labor Day Weekend.

Swain County Heritage Museum manager Rita Jones, in attendance at the meeting, said it was a good idea to make sure to open the roads this weekend.

“All the people coming from the coast, with the storm, they’re gonna come here,” she said.

Bowe said boring under the section of road currently under construction was complete, and they would soon be moving further up Everett Street near Fontana Road. They also have plans this week to start switching people over to new water services. Bowe reiterated that any outages from this would be very brief.
