On Tuesday, Swain County High School Lady Devils varsity basketball team took on the Lady Bulldogs at home for a conference game, their first meeting of the season in a hard-fought game that was full of action until the final buzzer.

In the first quarter, Swain shot up on the scoreboard taking the lead early on. The first quarter ended with the Lady Devils leading 17-6 thanks to a thrilling buzzer beater from half court by Marlee Hicks.

Going into the second, Swain kept their lead, but the Lady Bulldogs started gaining on them with free throws from fouls. Swain remained with a three-point lead entering halftime of 30-27.

After the half, Murphy tied up the game at 30-30 but a basket by Maddie Spates broke the tie and gave Swain a two-point advantage. The teams went back and forth with baskets and with 5:30 left in the third quarter Swain had a tight lead of 37-36. A few more foul shots allowed Murphy to climb their way up ahead entering the final quarter with Murphy leading 45-43. Swain unfortunately couldn’t stop the Lady Bulldogs comeback in the final quarter with free throws from fouls driving home the 61-54 win for Murphy.
