The Swain County High Lady Devils soccer team lost in a 2-1 game against the Brevard Blue Devils for their home opener on Tuesday night, March 14.

The game didn’t see any scores for the first 30 minutes. But with only just under 10 minutes left Brevard scored a goal – then minutes later, they scored again.

Swain’s Karena Cline, with just under three minutes left, took a corner kick and Cora Watkins got a body on the ball, finishing it for a goal.

But that was the final time either team scored a goal all game.

In the end, Brevard’s two goals won the team the game.

Head coach Scott Cline said the game was one in which they’d had opportunities they couldn’t take advantage of.

“We knew going into the game that Brevard would be a tough team. They have only played 2A and 3A schools this season before us.” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “We definitely played them tough and had some opportunities that we just did not convert into goals.”

Sophie Matz led defense with nine clears/steals, and Anna Gray followed with six. Matz was also the player of the game, with Cline saying she did a great job.

“Sophie did a great job as one of our Center Backs which is a different position than she has played this season so far,” he said.

The next Lady Devils soccer game will be an away conference game on Thursday, March 16, when they’ll play Blue Ridge in Cashiers.
