Last Wednesday, Feb. 2 this season’s track team became Swain’s first ever indoor track team to win the Smoky Mountain Conference Championship! They competed at Cherokee against three other teams: Cherokee, Murphy and Robbinsville.

 

Maroon Devils

Swain’s Austin Jenkins was first in 55-meter hurdles with 8.7 and in the 55-meter dash Gavin Roland was 4th with 7.56 and Joe Bjerkness with 8.20. In the boys 300 M dash Gavin Roland was 2nd with 41.86 and in the 500-meter run Kane Jones was first with 1:13.05, Spencer Roland second with 1:25.37, and Jackson Pittard in third with 1:31.25. For the 1,000-meter run, Abhi Patel was first with 3:07.80, Connor Lambert in second with 3:08.10, and Jaxon McClung in third with 3:17.10 and in the 1,600-meter run Corey Wolf was 4th with 5:42. Swain came in 2nd in the 4x200 meter relay and 1st in the 4x400 and 4x800 relay.

In long jump, Kelan McCullough was first and in triple jump Austin Jenkins was 2nd and Kelan McCullough was third. In the high jump, Matthew Gray was first and Kelan McCullough was second. For pole vault Matthew Gray was first, Jackson Pittard was second.

Swain won the meet with 89 points, with Murphy trailing in second with 55 points, Cherokee in third with 49 and Robbinsville in fourth with 17.

 

Lady Devils

For girls 55-meter hurdles, Swain’s Melani Linton was second, Karena Cline in third, and Alden Thomas in fourth and for 55 meter dash Melani Linton was fourth with 8.24, Sienna Hackshaw in fifth with 8.35, and Cora Watkins in sixth with 8.51. For the 300-meter dash Sienna Hackshaw was third with 46.83, Melani Linton in fourth with 51.27, and Amelia Rogers in seventh with 54.75. In the 500-meter Amaya Hicks was first with 1:23.78 and Lilah Foster was fourth with 1:50 and for the 1,000-meter run Gracie Monteith was first with 3:29, Lily Bjerkness in second with 3:47.17, and Joespehine Parsons in fifth with 4:33.

For the 1,600-meter run Arizona Blankenship was first with 5:25 and Lauryn Linton in second with 6:43 and in the 3,200-meter AZ was also first with 11:43.20 and Gracie Monteith was second with 13:54.70.

In the 4x200 meter relay Swain was second with 2:01.37 and first in the 4x400 with 4:47. Swain was also first in the 4x800 with 11:22.25.

For shot put, Annasette Cooper was in 5th and Sarabeth Sutton in seventh, for long jump Isabella Walker was fourth and Kiersten Smith was fifth, and triple jump Kiersten Smith was fourth, Isabella Walker in fifth, and Cora Watkins in sixth. Gracie Sutton was first in high jump and Amelia Rogers was first in pole vault, followed by Laiken Harvey in second.

Swain was first at the meet with 97.5 points, Robbinsville in second with 61.5, Murphy third with 38, and Cherokee in fourth with 11.

The Devils track team continues to break records and win championships, despite having the setback of not having their own track to host meets. This just proves the team’s dedication and perseverance to the sport. Keep it up Devils!
