Swain County’s community spread of COVID-19 increased in the second week of the state’s County Alert System. Combining three metrics including case rate, percent of people testing positive for the virus and hospital impact, the alert system placed Swain County as Red for Nov. 6-19.

The system has three tiers beginning with Yellow for significant spread, Orange for substantial and Red for critical.

In the far western part of the state, Swain County was the only county in the Red Nov. 6-19.

Swain County Health Department released the latest data on Wednesday, Nov. 25, with the number of active cases ticking up from 36 on Monday to 41 Wednesday. The total number of tests is 7,599 with 7,160 negative and 38 pending results. There have been five deaths.

The greatest number of positive cases in the county have been among people aged 25-49 years old followed by those aged 50-64. The overall number of cases continues a steady climb, with cases rising more steadily since September.

The state urges counties that enter substantial and critical spread to take further actions to stop the spread.
