TDA shows interest in electric vehicle charging stations

With a sizeable budget for Swain County, the Tourism and Development Authority gets pitched a few ideas from the county. Among those heard at their meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 9 was adding two electric vehicle-charging stations in town and upgrades to the county pool.

Maroon Devils making their mark: Jackie Corbin

The game ball was supposed to go to Swain, or so the Maroon Devils thought. Instead, a Franklin High player snatched the ball from the referee and ran away with it. Swain had already won the football game, but round two erupted in the form of a bench and bleacher-clearing brawl.

School bus stop violation puts student at risk

On Tuesday, Sept. 1, a Swain County student was nearly struck by a vehicle after descending from a school bus and crossing the street. The yellow school bus was stopped on Slope Street, with its stop arm deployed, to allow for the student to cross for a drop off at the United Community Bank.

Schools continue meal delivery service to all children

Swain County Schools can continue delivering meals to students along bus routes throughout the county. Just days after announcing the district would no longer be able to offer the service, the district learned the U.S.

Sports season plans unveiled at school board meeting

Swain County Board of Education held a special called meeting Monday, Aug. 31 in the Swain Arts Center, which was also broadcast live. The purpose of the meeting was to get an update on how the schools are doing under the circumstances of the current COVID-19 health pandemic.

First student case of COVID-19 reported in Swain

On Friday, Aug. 28, Swain County Schools shared that a Swain Middle School student had tested positive for COVID-19. According to the release, the student was exposed to the virus outside of school and is under quarantine.

Inmate death reported at Swain County jail

Jessica Webb editor@thesmokymountaintimes.com   Swain County Sheriff’s Office reported on Friday, Aug. 28 that a male inmate died while in custody at approximately 3:50 a.m. that morning. Joseph William Lomas, 25, of Cherokee, had been taken into custody on Aug.

Search on for suspects in Alarka homicide

The Swain County Sheriff’s Office is seeking assistance from the public in a homicide case. Lorene Dawn Morris, 70, who resided at 850 Deep Gap Road in Alarka, is dead. Law enforcement believes she was killed on Friday, Aug. 14 and the suspect or suspects took off in her vehicle.
