4 wedding anniversaries celebrated with French cuisine

Love was in the air and so was the aroma of French cuisine at the historic 102-year-old Fryemont Inn Saturday, Aug. 23. Four happy couples celebrated their wedding anniversaries, surrounded by fashionably dressed Fryemont Inn dinner guests.

Pickleball popularity spikes

Pickle ball participation has surged in Bryson City from only four players in August 2022 to a whopping 92 players three years later. The sport has turned into a daily routine for retired registered nurse Judy Manely, who recently celebrated her 84th birthday Aug. 17.

Alcoholics Anonymous members Terry and D.R. were blackout drinkers from early on. As AA sponsors committed to helping others get clean and stay clean, they selected first-name aliases to share their personal sobriety journeys.

County to fill chair vacancy

The Swain County Board of Commissioners will discuss next steps in filling their chairman’s seat during their upcoming meeting Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 5:30 p.m. Chairman Kevin Seagle has resigned from his position effective Sunday, Aug. 31.

School bus and pedestrian safety

Students who ride school buses are most at risk in the “danger zone” – outside the bus. Swain County Sheriff Brian Kirkland said drivers need to slow down and remain cognizant of the county’s many rural, curvy roads. “Sight distance is not great,” said Kirkland.
