Long View Resort offers escape from the ordinary

Long View Resort is a full-service Scandinavian style micro-resort hanging from the mountainside near Pelohi Cove in Grassy Branch, approximately 10 minutes from downtown Bryson City.

Roam free at the farm

The Bumgarner family — Faye, Robbie and Hilary — love Highland cattle so much that they opened Walnut Creek Farm to the public in April 2024. The family business has done exceptionally well over this past year.

Former Swain County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Brian Kirkland was appointed sheriff following a 4-1 vote at a county commission meeting Tuesday. Kirkland was sworn in Wednesday evening at the Swain County Courthouse. The appointment is through November 2026.

Joseph Stearns of California was in Tennessee at his wife’s family reunion and his son, Joseph “Grant” Stearns, just so happened to be hiking the Appalachian Trail in New Hampshire when Canadian wildfires sent him packing to Atlanta this past June.

Under surveillance

Island Park now has security cameras. This comes after many locals and visitors have reported feeling unsafe at the town park. Resident Allyson Osgood was among them. “There are too many needles,” said Osgood.

P.A.W.S. Animal Shelter fundraiser at Hillbilly Jam

P.A.W.S. Animal Shelter is selling beverages to raise money for local cats and dogs in need at the Hillbilly Jam at Maggie Valley Festival Grounds Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Meanwhile, Hillbilly Jam will run both days from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Curtis Cochran, former Swain County sheriff, was indicted on a second-degree forcible rape charge by a grand jury on Monday, July 21. SBI agents arrested Cochran Tuesday morning, July 22. He was released on a $50,000 secured bond.
