Rita R. Miller, age 73, of Asheville NC, passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2016 at CarePartners Hospice’s Solace Center.

Born July 6, 1942 in Minneapolis MN, she was the daughter of the late Atlanta and Walter Rustad. She had two sisters; Sandra Donovan, the late Patricia Rustad, and her sister-in-law, Judy Miller.

Rita leaves two daughters; Michelle Miller (husband, Shannon Lackey) of Bryson City, NC, and Teresa Adkins (husband, Andrew Adkins) of Barboursville, WV; two grandchildren, Embry Ambrose, and Owen Adkins.

She is also survived by two nephews; Devin Donovan (wife, Sherri Donovan) and Ethan Miller (wife Tara Miller).

Rita attended local schools and graduated from Washburn High School in Minneapolis MN.

She relocated to Martinsburg, WV in 1964 where she went to work for Corning Glass Works.

Rita married F.E. “Bud” Miller, Jr in 1967, and had 43 wonderful years of marriage together before Bud passed away at the age of 72 on Nov 28, 2010.

She was an active member of the Junior Civic League, worked for AAA Travel Agency, and enjoyed numerous friends with whom she and Bud played tennis, celebrated annual superbowl parties, and shared yearly multi-family beach and ski vacations.

Rita spent the last 10 years in Asheville, NC (the first five years with Bud) and enjoyed their home with mountain views, where she made many new friends, and took delight in a brand new yard, where she got to express her creative talents in landscaping.

She was so touched with gratitude for how CarePartners Hospice Foundation cared for her husband at the end of his life, that she donated her time as a volunteer for their local thrift store over the past few years.

Rita didn’t know a stranger. She had a smile and a hug for everyone she met. She was a dear friend to so many, a devoted wife, and a loving mother and grandmother. She will be deeply missed.

Graveside Funeral Service will be held at Rosedale Cemetery, 917 Cemetery Rd., Martinsburg, WV, at 4pm on Friday, April 8. Following the service, there will be a Celebration of Rita’s Life at the Purple Iris at Hartwood Mansion from 6pm – 9pm, 1956 Winchester Ave., Martinsburg, WV 25405, phone: 304-262-6110

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the CarePartners Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 25338, Asheville NC 28813, phone: 828-277-4815

The Miller family would like to express their gratitude to everyone who has shown so much love and support during this difficult time.
