Lady Devils track and field win meet, ranked #1 in state

On Wednesday, March 31, the Swain County High School Maroon Devils track and field teams competed in the Mountaineer Classic at Western Carolina University, winning first place for girls and fourth for boys.

Hosted by Tuscola High School, Swain was the only 1A school in the meet, edging out 2A and 3A schools.

The girls scored 128 points to second place Polk County’s 99.50.  The boys finished with 82 points to first place Tuscola at 137.

“It was a very strong performance by both our boys and girls’ teams,” head coach Ian Roper said. “We are making steady progress toward where we want to be come championship season.”

For the girls, Kathryn Brown won the discus throw at 100 feet, nine inches, and Emma Blythe finished third at 92 feet, five inches.

In the long jump, Maleeah Langstaff won with a jump of 4 feet, 10 inches, and Grace Cabe was right behind her at 4 feet, eight inches.

Langstaff also won the 400-meter dash at 58.85, and Cabe finished in second place in the 300-meter hurdles by less than a second at 52.25 seconds.

Shelby Hyatt won the 3200-meter run by 20 seconds at 12:29 and came in third for 1600 meter run at 5:59. Sarah Hyatt finished third in pole vault at seven feet, six inches.

In the relay races, the girls won the 4x800 by four seconds at 10:56, second in the 4x200 by less than one second at 1:53.19, and third in the 4x400 at 4:26.

For the boys, Cooper Reinert won first in pole vault at 12 feet, six inches with his teammate Tanner Wiggins in third reaching 11 feet.

Angel Bowers jumped 19 feet, 7 inches in the long job, earning second place, and Lee Langstaff got second place in high jump at 5 feet, 8 inches.

Caleb Woodard finished in third place in shot put at 43 feet, five inches.

As a whole, the team had 41 season-best performances, which Roper described as “unfathomable.”
