The Swain County High School Lady Devils softball team traveled to Hayesville High School on Monday, April 4 and left victorious after a 6-1 win.

“I thought we played well,” said head coach Toby Burrell.  “A lot of good things came from the game itself in terms of resiliency.”

Starter Taylor Day was the one who pleaded guilty for resiliency, facing three bases-loaded situations in the second, fourth and fifth innings but only allowing one run.

“She got more locked in as things got tougher,” Burrell said. “She was able to hit spots and forced them to hit the ball where we wanted them to hit it.”

Day threw a complete game with seven strikeouts giving up one run and two walks.

Offensively, the Lady Devils’ three runs in the second inning was more than enough for the victory.

The team also scored one run in the sixth after Bryar Buchanan hit a triple and later scored and added two more runs in the seventh after Sydney Call’s RBI triple and score.

The top of the lineup with Grace Cabe, Erin Jenkins and Sydney Call went a combined 6-12 with three runs and two RBIs to lead the offense.

Before the win on Monday, the Lady Devils fell in a road game against Pisgah High School 4-0 on Thursday, March 31.

It rained nonstop all game, and it eventually was called early in the bottom of the fifth due to poor field conditions.

Pisgah scored two in the second inning on two doubles and a triple and added two more in the fifth via two walks and two singles.

Erin Jenkins got two of the team’s three hits, going 2-2 with a walk. Day threw 5.1 innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on eight hits, three walks, and two strikeouts.

The team’s game versus Cherokee High School on Tuesday was postponed with no makeup game known yet.

After the two games, the Lady Devils stay above .500 at 6-5 and travel to Blue Ridge High School on Friday, April 8 at 4:30 p.m.
