Glenna Burns Waldroup, 84, of Bryson City, passed away at home after a long period of declining health, Monday, August 20, 2018. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Jim and Laura Bumgarner Burns. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by brothers and sisters: Taylor, Jimmy, Helen, Charles, Faye, Fannie, Janie, and Grady.

Glenna was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who was very kind and hardworking. She loved the Maroon Devils. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and being with family.

Michael (Mike) G. Southards, 60, of the Alarka Community, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, August 13, 2018. A native of Swain County, he was the son of Margaret Andrews of Trinity, NC and the late Harold Johnny Southards.

Asheville— Russell E. Webb, 74, passed away Friday, August 17, 2018 at Mission Hospital. Born in Buncombe County, he was preceded in death by his parents and mother of his two children, Crystal Webb. He was an Air Force Veteran of the Vietnam War. 

He retired from the City of Los Angeles, CA and returned to Asheville, working for Vaughn & Melton Engineers. He was a member of the NC Society of Surveyors and NRA. 

His family include his wife, Bryson City native, Leshia Lee Webb, brother-in-law, George V. Lee (Debra), and mother-in-law, Ethel Brendle Osborne. 

Kevin Rass Clampitt, age 47, went home to the lord on August 13, 2018. He was a wonderful father, son and friend to all who knew him. He was born in Riverside California.

Kevin is survived by his wife Melissa, Daughters Mallerie and Mary. His brother Ian, and parents Rass and Eleanor Clampitt of Bryson City, N.C.

There will be no funeral services per his request to be cremated.

A memorial service will be held from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM Saturday, August 25th, 2018 at Crisp Funeral Home Chapel.

Ms. Sara Josephine Fortner Moore, 81, of Bryson City, NC went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 4, 2018.  Ms. Josephine was born in Bryson City on May 27, 1937 to the late Elijah and Nota Belle Baines Fortner, Sr.

On Friday, July 27, God reached down his loving hand and carried his faithful servant, Barbara Ellen Cloer Wiggins to Heaven on wings of love.

She was preceded in death by  her loving husband, Buster Wiggins; parents, Thurman and Bertha Seay Cloer; brother, Junior “Moe” Cloer; sister, Kathleen Woods.

Gerald Manley Shook, Sr. went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, July 31st at his birth home. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 50 years, Carolyn Ann Flowers Shook, along with 4 brothers, and 5 sisters.

 Surviving are 3 children, Gerald Manley Shook Jr. (Cheryl) of Bryson City, Paula LeGrow and husband Gordon of Waynesville, NC, and Thomas Shook and wife Dorinda of Bryson City. He had 5 grandchildren, Jennifer, Kaelob, Gabbi, Kierra and Bekah; 2 great grandchildren, Mijo and Zadita.

Galena Messer Allison, 95, of Bryson City, entered Heaven on June 24th, 2018, at Harris Regional Hospital, Sylva, N.C.  Born February 25th, 1923 in the Camp Creek Community of Jackson County, N.C. to the late Wilburn and Gertrude Ashe Messer.  She had resided in Swain County, N.C. for many years.

James Harvey Burrell, age 74 of Sevierville, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, joined his wife Gwen in Heaven on Sunday, July 29, 2018. He was born May 14, 1944. Jim ran Action Antiques for 30 years. Besides selling antiques, his passion included making everyone he knew a little kinder, a little wiser, a little more thankful, and a lot happier. Jim was a proud republican and loved his “Make America Great Again” hat.

Patrick William King, age 52, died on July 9, 2018 after a long battle with cancer which he fought courageously.

He is the son of Ann and John King of the Silvermine and Nantahala Gorge communities.

Patrick loved nature, hiking with his dogs, traveling to and living in places of beauty. He lived his life to the fullest, making lasting friendships everywhere he went.

To honor his wishes there will be no formal service. Patrick would ask instead that you take a walk in the woods, skip a stone across the river, be kind to animals and each other.

John Pohlenz, 71, of Whittier, NC, passed away Saturday, July 21, 2018.

Born in Miami, FL, he was the son of the late Roy and Irma Pohlenz.  John spent most of his life in Western North Carolina and was a motorcycle enthusiast, avid fisherman, and master carpenter.  He served in the US Navy during Vietnam.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Pohlenz; daughter, Margo Pohlenz Porter, of Greenville, SC; and many cousins.

Willie Maynard Newman, age 88 of Loudon, passed away Friday, July 13, 2018 at home.  

He was a US Army Veteran serving during the Korean War from February 1951 to February 1953 as an Infantry Corporal.  He then served in the Reserves for five years. 

Preceded in death by:  Father, Tom Davis Newman; Mother, Velma Wilson Newman; Brothers & Sisters, Joyce Cockerham, Reese Newman, Ed Newman, John Newman, Juanita Rinehart; Grandson, Joshua Newman.  

April 13, 1937- July 8, 2018

Barbara passed peacefully on July 8 11:20pm CST in Woodlands, TX.  She leaves behind 3 children Valerie, Michael and Melanie.  A daughter in law – Eileen and 4 grandchildren- Jordan, Colin, Joshua and Jacob Weingrad. Two sisters- Betty and Louise and a brother Harold.

Our mother was beautiful, talented, gracious and giving.  She attended Western Carolina University where she was a scholar and played on the Women’s Basket Ball team.  She moved to Atlanta where she met our father Jerry. 

Larry Burton Spence, age 77, went home to the Lord on July 7th. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

He was born to Maxine and Burton Spence on March 23, 1941 in Carthage, Missouri.

Surviving are his wife Carol of 49 years. His son, Larry Jr.; daughters, Sandra and Pam; his grandchildren, Logan, Taylor, Krystal and Shannon.

He was a member of the Whittier Church of God, a retired Navy Veteran, a member of the VFW Post 9281, and a member of the American Legion Post 143.

Jackie Joe Crowder, 77, of Canton, formerly of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Thursday, June 28, 2018. He was the son of the late Oscar and Frances Collins Crowder and wife of the late Betty Crowder. He was also preceded in death by his son, Eddie Crowder.

He was a member of Whittier Baptist Church and a US Army Veteran.

Jackie is survived by his son, Michael Crowder; granddaughter, Jessica; three sisters, Polly Taylor, Annie Kirkland and Wille Garren; many nieces and nephews and a special companion, Claudia Trantham.
