Edna Campbell Lawson, 78, of Whittier, NC, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 25, 2018, at her home with her family by her side. Born on August 8, 1940 in Columbia, Richland County, SC, the daughter of the late Boyd & Edna Horton. 

She was an alumnus of Carson Newman University in Jefferson City, TN, where she majored in Home Economics. She was also an alumnus of The University of South Carolina, where she received her Master of Education. 

Joan Duckett Gurney, 57, of Vine Grove, KY passed away Saturday, October 20, 2018 at her residence. 

Mrs. Gurney was a member of Faith Lutheran Church (WELS), Radcliff, KY.  She was retired from Ireland Army Hospital, Fort Knox, KY where she worked as a nurse.

Marvin Mitchell McHan, 59, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 3, 2018 after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

A lifetime resident of Bryson City, he was the son of the late Don McHan and Shirley Arvey McHan Douthit. A graduate of Swain County High School, he enjoyed playing football and was named All-Conference.

Emma Virginia Polasky Molinatto, best known as Jinny, 89, of the Coopers Creek Community, Bryson City, NC, died Sunday, November 4, 2018 in hospice care at Harris Hospital in Sylva, NC.

Virginia was born in Pittsburg, PA, in 1929 where she lived until moving as a child to Warren, OH. She graduated from Champion High School in Warren. 

During WWII, Jinny worked in an ammunitions factory. After taking secretarial courses, she became a secretary at the Grinnell Sprinkler Company and to an attorney in Ohio. 

Evelyn Brooks, 83, of the Alarka community went to her eternal home with the Lord on October 26, 2018. The daughter of the late Robert and Dollie Parris Jenkins, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Solomon Matthew Brooks. 

She was also preceded in death by one sister, Alta Downs, and one brother, Garl Jenkins. 

She was a loving Christian mother for many years.

Norma Jean Totherow Grant, 83, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Friday, October 26, 2018. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Myrtle Marr Totherow and wife of the late Odell Grant Sr. whom she was married to for 62 years. She was a lifelong member of Nantahala Baptist Church where she sang in the choir.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, J.B., Cecil, Bob, and Lionel Totherow.

James Robert Almond was born in Bryson City on April 5, 1930, and sadly passed away on 9/18/18 at the age of 88 years old. 

He was one of 4 sons raised by Gove & Ethel Almond. He grew up in Bryson City, North Carolina. He played football at Swain County HS where his nickname there was “ the little Choo- Choo”!

He married Frances Bowman in 1948 when he relocated to Detroit, Michigan. 

Later, he moved to Georgia & lived over 60 years in Decatur, Ga. He recently moved to an Assisted Living facility in Monroe, Ga where he passed away suddenly on 9/18/18.

Lois Lovingood Robinson, 96, of Bryson City, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, October 22, 2018. Lois was born on May 10, 1922 in Swain County to the late Joseph Cube and Bessie Smiley Lovingood. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband B.K. Robinson; a son Joseph Aaron Robinson, and a Baby Boy; one brother, Tom Lovingood; two sisters, Maude Reeves, and Edna Jenkins.

Lois became a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church in 1953. She was a very loving and dedicated mother and friend to everyone she met.

Charles (Cubby) Shuler of the Deep Creek Community passed away at home on October 16, 2018. The son of the late Roy and Bonnie Shuler he was preceded in death by one brother, John (Johnny) Shuler.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Shuler; one daughter, Sarah Miller; one son, William and wife Latresa and one granddaughter, Autum Miller.

He graduated Swain High Class of 1963 and graduated A-B Tech with a Business Degree. He was in the Army National Guard, owned Shuler Furniture with his brother, but most of all, his love was farming and spending time with his kids.

William Joseph Hoak, 71, a resident of Deming, NM entered eternal rest on Monday, October 15, 2018 at his residence. 

William was born on December 12, 1946 in Greensburg, PA to Thomas Clark Hoak and Elizabeth Jane Williamson. 

William is survived by his loving wife, Glenda Norton Hoak; one brother, Scott Presley and his wife Nancy; his mother in law, Helen Norton; his sister in law, Marilyn Norton; his nephews in law, Christian and Chandler Norton; one grandson, Jeremy Burris and his wife Leann and one great granddaughter, Riley Burris, all of North Carolina. 

Gwyndolyn Cline Ayers, 88, of Bryson City passed away peacefully at Cherokee Indian Hospital on Monday, October 8th, 2018.  A native of Swain County and an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, she was the daughter of the late Luzene and Fred Cline. 

She was preceded in death by her husband Harold Boyd Ayers.

William E. Howard of 23 Joy Heights, Bryson City, passed away Monday, October 8, 2018.

He was preceded in death by his father, Levi Henry Howard.

He is survived by his mother, Estella; son, William Howard Jr. (Arrington); granddaughter, Baysden Estella Howard; and his brother, Timothy Howard (Patricia).

A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Rev. Timothy Howard will officiate.

Kolen Flack, 92, of Union Mills, NC passed away Saturday, September 15, 2018 at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC.

Kolen was born in Rutherford County, NC to the late John and Malinda Flack. He is also preceded in death by his wife Mildred Bell Flack, five brothers, and four sisters. 

Kolen proudly served our country during WWII in the US Navy. He later retired from the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. Kolen was a member of Western Star #91, AF&AM, a 70-gallon blood donor, and a lifelong member of Round Hill Baptist Church.

Max Gardner Breedlove, 88, of Bryson City passed away Friday, September 28, 2018. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Robert and Lela Bradley Breedlove. He was a member of Brush Creek Baptist Church.

A US Army Veteran having served in Korea, he was a member of the Franklin VFW Post 7339.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Robert Thad Breedlove of Bryson City, Doris Tallent of Maryville, TN, and Chloe Crisp of Bryson City.

Crystal Gail Cochran Styles, 36, of Bryson City passed away September 12, 2018.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Jerry Cochran.

She is survived by her parents, Dee Wayne and Hester Cochran; husband, Tim Styles; her son, Chazum Keener; mother and father-in-law, Vernon and Judy Styles; siblings, Cecil Cochran and wife Donna, Michael “PeeWee” Cochran and wife Jessica, and Kevin Brown; Chazum’s father, Alan Keener, and grandparents, Mimi and Poppy (Troy and Pat Keener).
