Loving Husband, Father

Bryson City-Tom Sandlin, age 80, passed away at Mission Hospital on Thursday, November 16, 2017.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Doris S. McLean.

Tom is survived by his wife of 45 years, Linda S. Sandlin of Bryson City; daughters, April D. Sandlin of Bryson City and Laura A. Johnson of Salisbury; stepsons, Shane and Howie Suttles of Bryson City; and 7 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Joe Almond passed away Thursday, November 23, 2017. He was a native of Swain County and was the son of the late Gove B. Almond, Sr. and Ethel McCracken Almond. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and also served 27 years as a volunteer on the Bryson City Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Jack Almond and Jr. Almond.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jean Cole Almond. Children: Eddie Almond (Lawana Cooper Almond), Ann Almond Howell (Bill Howell). Grandchildren: Will Howell (Jean Ann Howell), Courtney Almond, Ashley Almond (Bambi Persinger).

Edna Locust Hornbuckle, 84, of the Birdtown community went home to be with the Lord on November 20th surrounded by her loving family. She worked at Cherokee Boys Club for 27 years.

Michael Wilson “Mike” McCauley, age 69, of Whittier passed away Tuesday, November 14th, 2017 at home. He was the husband of Rege McCauley and the son of the late George and Sue McCauley.  

He was a retired mental health professional. He was a member of the Cherokee Church of Christ and loved his family dearly.

Anita “Jo” Ann Gazda, 74, of Fontana Lake, passed away Tuesday November 14, 2017 surrounded by her loving family.  

She was born on January 17, 1943 in Baker City, Oregon, the daughter of the late Albert Ullman and the late Anita Ullman.  

Joyce Gayle York Nuedling, 72, of Bryson City, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, November 15, 2017. A longtime resident of Bryson City, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Carrie Green York, and wife of the late Albert Nuedling. In addition to her husband and parents she was also preceded in death by one brother Carol Ray York.

Reverend Roy Page Lindsay, a servant of God, Family, and Country, was taken home to Heaven on November 11, 2017, at the age of 72, after battling several cancers for an extended period of time.

Rev. Lindsay, born to Carroll and Hazel Lindsay, was a native of the Wesser Creek Community of Swain County where he resided until the time of his death.

Irene C. Wilson, 96, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Monday, November 13, 2017. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Lee and Nora Ann Nichols Crisp and wife of the late William O. Wilson.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Vincent and Earl Crisp.

She is survived by her son, William O. Wilson, Jr.; and her grandson, William O. Wilson, III.

Esther Lee McGuire Cole, 89, of Whittier, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, November 9, 2017. A native of Swain County she was the daughter of the late Nola and J.B. McGuire, and wife of the late Harley Cole. In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by one sister, Ruth McKinney.

Beatrice Brooks Waldroup, 70, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, October 31, 2017. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Walter Lloyd and Lela Garland Brooks. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Opal Brown.

 

Doris “Granny” West Catt, 92, of Cherokee went home to be with the Lord Sunday, November 5, 2017 at Cherokee Indian Hospital. A native of Cherokee, she was the daughter of the late Buck and Susie Sequoyah West. She was a member of Big Cove Missionary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Catt; grandson, James “Bug” Wolfe; two sisters, Gladys and Edna; and six brothers, Alfred, Cecil, Jim, Frank, Norman and Don.

 

William (Bill) Larry Lambert, 72, of Bryson City, went home to be with the Lord, Monday November 6, 2017. A native of Jackson County and longtime resident of Swain County, he was the son of the late Jack and Selma Messer Lambert. In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by three sisters, Lovicia Cole, Elizabeth Dennis, and Katherine Lambert.

He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps having served in the Vietnam Era. He was also an avid fisherman and hunter.

Bryson City, NC – Bettie M. Seay, who would have been 90 on November 10th, passed away on November 3, 2017 at Four Seasons Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, NC.

Born in Liverpool, England, she immigrated to the U.S. to marry Walter Seay, a serviceman in the U.S. Air Force, who died 2002. Miss Bettie is preceded in death by her father, Charles Jones, mother Ada Lewis, brothers, Alec and Harry Jones, sister Trixie Jones, brother-in-law, Brian Hanson, all of England.

Mary Chambers Hyland, resident of The Hermitage in Sylva, went to her Heavenly Home on October 21, 2017. She was 88.

 Mary was born in Fulton, Mississippi to Paul and Ethel (Sumners) Smith on July 12, 1929. She married J.R. Chambers of Swain County, NC in September 1947 and he preceded her in death in 1989. She married Dan Hyland of Buffalo, NY in 1993 and Dan passed away in 2013.

 

Feirol Jim Davis, 88, of Sylva passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at John Keever Solace Center of Asheville, NC.  Mr. Davis was born November 20, 1928 in Transylvania County, NC. He is the son of the late Ross Walton and the late Della (Powell) Davis. 

He had a sister, Donnie Virginia Davis Winchester, step mother Ellie Davis and two brothers, also deceased.

He attended Swain County schools and served his country during the Korean War.
