Suzanne Davis Bunn, aged 82, passed away at Cypress Glen Retirement Community in Greenville, North Carolina on July 19, 2016 after a long illness. 

Larry York, 64, of the Alarka community was called home to meet his Heavenly Father peacefully Sunday, July 10, 2016 in a Jackson County healthcare facility. A native of Swain County, he was the son of Lorraine Bowers Keepfer of Bryson City and the late Leslie York.

Carolyn Slagle Lindsay, 74, of the Lauada Community, went to be with her husband Robert Lindsay who was a Purple Heart recipient for the Vietnam War; her son Robbie; her parents Nelson and Dess Byrd Slagle, and a sister Elizabeth Slagle Morris.

She is survived by two sisters, Laura E. Holden of Bryson City and Catherine Wiggins and husband Earl of Asheville, NC; one half-brother, Clinton Slagle of the Ela Community, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Services for Mrs. Betty Singletary of Bryson City, NC formerly of Thomasville were held Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. at Whiddon-Shiver Funeral Home with interment following at Laurel Hill Cemetery. The family received friends from 11:00 a.m. until noon at the funeral home before the service.

Eural Rollins, 88, of the Stecoah Community went home to be with the Lord Thursday June 30, 2016 at his residence. A native of Hartford, Tennessee he was the son of the late Isaac and Bertie James Rollins and husband of the late Opal Cable Rollins.

He was preceded in death by one son Rocky Rollins; three sisters; Janie Crisp, Viola Cobb, and Becky Spurling; and four brothers Roy, J.C., Jack, and Charlie Rollins.

He is survived by a son; Larry Rollins, a step-daughter Brenda Dowdle, eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and a lot of nieces and nephews.

Jerry E. Corbin, age 76, of Greenville, Michigan passed away late Friday evening, June 24, 2016 at his daughter’s home under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Michigan.  Jerry had resided in Greenville, Michigan for the last four months. Prior to that, Jerry enjoyed his retirement in Franklin, North Carolina where he was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and the community.

Michael “Mike” George Slavish  of 1610 Needmore Rd passed away 6/23/2016 quietly in his sleep. Mike most recently was a chef at Highlands Country Club where a memorial service will be held at the Hudson House in his honor on Monday 7/11 at 6:00 PM. 

He was previously employed at The Grove Park Inn, Western Carolina University, and NOC. He was from Myrtle Beach, SC but followed his love for the mountains first to Asheville then to Bryson City 23 years ago. 

Cocoa, FL – Virginia Thompson Schenck, 88, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at her summer home in Bryson City.

A native of Wellesley Hills, Mass. she was the daughter of the late John Charteris Thompson and Ida Lawver Thompson. She was also preceded in death by a son, Charles Daniel Dreher Schenck.

 Mrs. Schenck was an alumna of WCUNC of Greensboro, NC Class of 1950.

Rickie D. Earls, 61, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 22, 2016. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late D.C. Jr. and Maxine Cochran Earls.

He is survived by his life partner, Barbara Bowman of Whittier; one son, Michael S. Earls; two sisters, Kim Earls Cochran and husband Fred Weeks of Bryson City, Pam Earls Guyer and husband David of Byron, GA; one brother, James Earls and wife Janice of Bryson City; and several nieces and nephews.

Jolene “Jody” Gunter, 76, of the Qualla Community went home to be with the Lord Monday June 27, 2016. A lifelong resident of the Qualla Community. She was the daughter of the late Homer and Louphelia Elders Gunter. Jody was a people person and enjoyed meeting and talking to people. She loved animals, especially her cat, and loved country music.

She is survived by her sister Doris Moore and husband Mike, one brother Carlos Gunter and wife Linda, and several nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth Dwain Moore, age 61, born January 22, 1955, departed this life to go be with God on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at her residence after a lengthy illness. 

She was born to the late Carl and Carrie Moore of Bryson City. 

She was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church, but also attended Corner Stone Wesleyan Church where she was a member of Joyful Noise. She retired from West Elementary School after 27 years. She also was employed by Swain County as a Court Security officer. 

Thomas Jackson Welch (Jack), 89, of Bryson City, passed away, Friday, June 17, 2016 at Mountain View Manor. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Thomas and Lavada Davis Welch, and husband of the late Moeina Welch.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran having served in World War II. He was Bryson City Town Manager for 30 years.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by four sisters, Blanche Cookston, Margaret Higdon, Dess Cogdill, and Louise Tabor, and one brother, Edward Welch.

Daniel Thomas Brown, Jr., 40, of Bryson City passed away Thursday, June 9, 2016. A native of Forsyth County, he was the son of Daniel Thomas Brown, Sr. of Mt. Airy, and the late Patricia Webb. He was a devoted father, husband and brother.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Hannha Mae Brown.

Geneva Ann Libich Hughes, 57, of the Grassy Branch community went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 8, 2016. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of Geraldine Orr Libich of Bryson City and the late Zigmont Libich and wife of the late Phillip Hughes.

Paul Earl Tapley of Whittier left his body on April 28, 2016.  He was 59 and is survived by his two sons, Forest and Skyler, wife Diana Kirk, brother Patrick, sister Paula Duhn, five nieces and nephews and sweet dog Kelsie.  

Memorial contributions should go to the Canary Coalition, a clean air non-profit in Sylva, of which he is a founding member.  

We give thanks to Paul for his dedicated service to others in community, also serving on the boards of Mountain Discovery Charter School and Swain County Youth Soccer Association. We love and miss you Paul.
