Clayton McHan, 74, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Monday, October 24, 2016. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Harvey Lee and Mae Leona Wikle McHan.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Blanche McHan; one son, Clayton Very McHan Jr; and two daughters, Evelyn Bradley and Nancy McHan.

No services are planned at this time.

Louise Smith Arvey, 76, of Hendersonville, went to be with the Lord on November 2, 2016.  Visitation was Friday November 4, 2016 from 1-2 pm and services immediately followed by Pastor Eddie Dietz at Crisp Funeral Home in Bryson City, NC.

Louise was born on March 25, 1940, the daughter of Clyde and Gladys Smith of Bryson City, NC.  Louise attended Swain High School until her senior year, when she attended and graduated from Sedro Wooley High School, WA.  Louise attended Everett Community College where she studied business.

Bryson City – Bobbie N. Fellows, 94, died peacefully 30 September 2016 after a brief period of declining health.  She was a lifelong resident of Swain County, graduated from Swain High School, volunteered and worked in several city, community, and charity events, and programs over the years.  She resided in both the Jackson Line and Jenkins Branch Communities.

She was pre-deceased by her parents, Walter and Martha Nichols, her husband, Robert G. Fellows, and Ruby Hoke, her sister from Conover NC.

Margaret Anne Calhoun, 90, formerly of Bryson City, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2016 at her residence in Asheville, NC. A longtime resident of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late George M Cole and Margaret Killian Cole of Tennessee.

She was a member of the Bryson City First Baptist Church and helped her husband operate Wallace’s Grocery and Bait Center for over 25 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace C Calhoun,  a son, Steve Calhoun, one grandson Gregg Wright and brothers George E Cole, William A Cole and James V Cole. 

Margaret Elizabeth Zilke-Oliver, 93, of Swain County in Bryson City, NC passed away 10/12/16 at Sunrise Assisted Living, Phoenix, AZ.

Funeral Service will be held 4:00 PM Friday October 21, 2016, at Crisp Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Ray Ball officiating. Internment will follow in Swain Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 3:00 PM until 4:00 PM Friday at the Chapel of Crisp Funeral Home.

Cherokee North Carolina- Hattie Giles Morris went to her heavenly home on October 13, 2016.

Hattie was born on October 10, 1918 in Polk County, North Carolina the fifth daughter of Nathaniel Giles and Addie Lee Walker.  Hattie wrote down her thoughts about how she wanted to be remembered and this is what she wanted everyone to know.

Max Clyde Davis, 78, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Thursday, October 13, 2016 at his residence. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Clyde S. and Beulah DeHart Davis.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Anita D. Wyatt and a son, Malcolm S. Davis.

Euadean Tuttle, 78, of Bryson City, N.C., passed away Wednesday, October 5th, 2016, at her son’s home in Sedalia, MO.

She was born October 7, 1937, in Cullowhee, N.C., daughter of Henry B. Hooper and Grace L. Cook Hooper. On July 2, 1956, in Fort Benning, GA, she married Preston Tuttle, who preceded her in death. 

She was a faithful servant of the Lord and devoted member of Harmony Baptist Church in Bryson City. 

Wilda “Bill” Littrell Allen, 67, of Whittier looked upon the face of God Wednesday, October 5, 2016. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Gladys Dills Littrell. She was a member of Patterson Chapel Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Tommy Littrell, George Littrell, Viola Elliott, John Littrell, and Timmy Littrell.

Linda Jean Wayman Wernsing, age 62, passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2016. She was the daughter of Dr. Robert M. Wayman and Frances Wayman of Bryson City, NC.

She is survived by her loving husband, John Wernsing, son John and Mine Wernsing, a grandson Michael, and a daughter Lauren and her fiancé J.C. Gallegos, whom Linda adored.

Surviving also are sisters Sandra Wayman, Carol Wayman Tait, Judith Wayman Ackerman, son Brett, and her daughter Holly, and brother David Wayman, his wife Adonna and sons Eric, Mark and Brian as well as many extended family members.

Charles Anderson Bradshaw, 85, of Whittier, NC, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016, while surrounded by loved ones, following a period of declining health. 

He was born February 28, 1931 in Crockett, TX to Lee and Ella Mae (Johnson) Bradshaw. 

At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Marine Corps where he proudly served during the Korean Conflict. For his time served he received many medals and honors, including the Korean Freedom Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1951.

Albert David (Al) Vaughn, 77, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, September 27, 2016. He was owner and operator of Vaughns Tree Service for 50 years, which will continue to operate as per his wishes.

Vergie Shook DeHart  passed away on October 2, 2016 at the age of 93.  Vergie was born October 14, 1922 to the late Rufus and Mamie Stalcup Shook.    She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph William DeHart, two brothers, Robert and Charles; sisters, Faye Hutchins, Lucille Pennington, Ruth Watson, Aileen Livingston, Jean Almond and Margaret Breedlove.

Vergie is survived by her sons Ralph L. DeHart (companion Kathy Long) and C. Michael DeHart (Beverly); six grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and sisters, Lillian Hipps, Carolyn Green and Marie Green.

Willard Wallace Martin, Sr., 90, of Raleigh, NC passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2016. A private memorial service will be held Saturday, October 8 in Asheville, North Carolina. He was born in Swain County, North Carolina to the late Willard and Sarah Martin. 

Brigette H. Shankles, 71, of Hixson died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016, at her home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ruby Hensley.

She was employed for many years by Buster Brown Apparel and other sewing and textile industries.

Mrs. Shankles loved her plants and flowers. She enjoyed sewing and cooking.

Mrs. Shankles took great pleasure in entertaining and socializing with friends.
