Margaret “Alice” Hyatt Webb, 61, of Sylva passed away Monday, June 17, 2019.

Born in Jackson County, she was the daughter of Margaret Young Hyatt and the late Leon Hyatt.  In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Wayne Webb and her brother, John Keith Hyatt.  Alice was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church and enjoyed flower gardening, wildflowers, and loved to go to thrift shops.  She loved cooking and doing for others in the community.

Louise Carter Carlson, formerly of Bryson City and Candler, NC passed away peacefully on June 11, 2019 in Eugene, Oregon.

Betty, as she was known to all who loved her, was born on August 21, 1931 in Hutchinson, Kansas. She had lived in Alaska, California and Texas, places where her husband Milton, a decorated career pilot in the US Air Force, had been stationed.

Martha JoAnn Marr Smith, age 77, of the Shephard’s Creek Community took her heavenly flight to be in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Friday June 7, 2019 after a courageous year’s long battle with lung cancer. 

She was born July 16, 1941 to the late Coburn and Etta Mae Marr of the Brush Creek Community.



Jean Stross Winchester, 96, went home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on June 7, 2019 at National Health Care in Sumter, SC.

Minnie Cloer Stanton, 101, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord, Monday June 3, 2019. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late James Pink and Elizabeth Oliver Cloer, and wife of the late Claude Stanton. In addition to her parents and husband she was also preceded in death by one son, Earl; two daughters, Alice Kirkland, and Betty Blazer; two granddaughters, Janet Marr Curtis, and Vikki Goree; one grandson, Jamie Stanton; three brothers, Bill, Thurman, and Fred, and one sister, Oma Birchfield.

Troy James Carson, 84, of Pisgah Forest, died Saturday, June 1, 2019 at his home.  Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Crisp Funeral Home on Friday, June 7, 2019 at 2:00 PM, with burial to follow at Laural Branch Cemetery.  The family will gather with friends one hour prior to the service, begining at 1:00 PM. 

On June 13th at 2 pm at the Bryson City Presbyterian Church, there will be a memorial service to remember Iris Stevenson Waters. 

Iris passed away on December 10th, 2018 at 90 years old. 

She had been living with her daughter Blair Willis and son in law Dr. Stu Willis in Bonners Ferry, ID. 

The community is invited to join the  Bryson City Presbyterian Church in celebrating Iris’s life.

Joseph W. “Jay” Edmonds, age 93, passed away on Saturday, June 1st at his home in Winston-Salem.  He was born in Asheville to the late Edgar Edmonds and Rachel Edmonds Gunter.  Jay was preceded in death by a sister, Willene Crawford, and a brother, W.D. Gunter.  During WWII he served in the European Theater, then returned to Bryson City and attended the University of Tennessee and Gardner Webb College, where he met his love and best friend, Clara Andrews Edmonds.

Eunice Herron Kirkland, 79, of Mooresville, passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2019, at Levine-Dixon Hospice House, Huntersville. 

Born November 20, 1939, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Ann Bowers Herron. 

Mrs. Kirkland retired from both Draymore Manufacturing and the Brian Center Dietary Department in Mooresville. She was a Christian woman who enjoyed the simple things in life, was a hard worker and loved her family fiercely. 

Mrs. Kirkland was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Kirkland and a sister, Eula.

Carl Johnson Nations, 91, of the Ela Community passed on May 30, 2019.  

Carl was a lifelong resident of the Whittier Community, a veteran of the U.S. Army,  and the owner of Nations Well Drilling and Pump Services for over 40 years before retiring.  He was an avid beekeeper for many years, sharing honey with friends, family and neighbors throughout the years.   

Carl was the son of Candler Vester Nations and Mary Love Parris Nations.  He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Helen McCoy Nations; brother Earl Lewis Nations; and grandson Jeremy Lee Nations.

Rebecca S. (Becky) Buchanan, 75, of Bryson City, entered into the arms of Jesus Sunday, May 26, 2019 after a 14 month courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Ethel Lakey Arvey. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church. Becky was a loving wife, mother and nana. She loved her Lord, church family, family gatherings, cooking, going to the beach, hummingbirds, lighthouses, covered bridges, red birds and going shopping. She loved doing for others.

Kolton Dean and Kooper Dean Humphrey, infant sons of Hunter Humphrey and Kristin Farmer passed away May 14, and May 15, 2019 respectively, in a Buncombe County Hospital.

In addition to their parents, they are survived by their grandparents, Clifton Gene Humphrey, Kari Michelle Humphrey, Mallora Lynn McMinn and husband Kelly, Jeremy Vincent Farmer; great grandparents, Patricia Farmer and Sharon Huffman, and Vannie and Edith Woodard; uncle, Joshua Farmer and Special Aunt, Myra Leeann Humphrey.

Daryl Wade Dillon passed away May 9, 2019 in Ft. Pierce, Florida due to a swimming accident in the Indian River Lagoon.  The accidental drowning occurred during a day out with friends.

Dr. Angela Marie DiLillo, age 57, passed away peacefully at her home in Dothan, Alabama after a courageous battle with cancer.  A native of Lincoln, Illinois, she was the daughter of Connie and the late Dr. Joseph DiLillo of Bryson City.

Doug Mathews, 74, of the Towstring Community went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 21, 2019. A native of Cherokee, he was the son of the late Seab and Floy Lambert Mathews.

He was a faithful servant of the Lord.

Doug is survived by his wife of 47 years, Glenda Mathews; two sons, Scott Mathews and wife Jeanne of Sylva, and Brian Mathews and wife Juanita of Cherokee; three grandchildren, Crystal Mathews, Ricky Mathews, and Eli Mathews.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday at Towstring Cemetery. Randall Watkins will officiate.
