Obituaries

Reverend Robert E. Sherrill, 87, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Friday, September 2, 2016. 

A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Munday Alexander and Ethel Louise Wilson Sherrill and was raised by his late grandparents, Rev. Joseph and Sarah Wilson. He graduated from Swain High School in 1947. 

He was a retired Air Force veteran having served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars and received the Bronze Star as well as numerous awards. He was a Southern Baptist minister for 35 years. He was a loving husband and father.

Robert James Ebert passed away Thursday, September 15, after a brief illness. He is survived by his beloved partner Ann, Children Ben (Louise), Linda, Tammy (David), and Suzie (Garrett), Ann’s children Kathleen, Steven, Beth (Mike), 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and many friends. Bob was born March 10, 1936, in Flint Michigan and at age 17 joined the U.S. Army. He served nearly 10 years in the Engineer Corp with tours in Korea, Okinawa, and Germany.

He was preceded in death by his wonderful wife of 47 years Venita, his parents and a sister Shirley.

Marian Catherine “Cathy” Cook, 75, of Bryson City passed away Friday, September 16, 2016. Born January 4, 1941 on Alarka, she was the daughter of the late Wilma J. Chavis and Carl Cochrane.

She was preceded in death by her son, David Westmoreland in 1994 and her husband Albert Cook in 1982.

She is survived by her son, Stephen Renzi (Nycole); brothers, Raymond Marr (Leigh), Charles and Harvey Marr. Neices, Tammy Marr Stein, Kristina Marr Prince, great niece, Ashley Rae Wilkinson (Justin), great nephew, Joshua Stein and Travis Clark (Lidia).

Claude Jackson Monteith, 88, of the Jackson Line Community, passed away, Wednesday, September 14, 2016. A native of Gaston County and longtime resident of Swain County, he was the son of the late J.H. and Isabell Christopher Monteith. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a grandson David M. Monteith Jr.

He was a faithful member of the Bryson City First Baptist Church.

Don Richard Dacus, 84, passed away peacefully in North Broward Hospital in Pompano Beach, FL, Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016, after a battle with cancer.  His brother Dale was at his side. 

Don was born Dec. 10, 1931 to Otto and Lucille Dacus in Memphis, Tenn.  The family moved to Bryson City, NC in the late 1940s and Don completed high school there.

After high school, Don graduated college at Western Carolina University in 1954 and then served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957.

Charles Hill King (Charlie), 80, of the Lauada Community, went home to be with the Lord, Friday September 2, 2016 at his residence. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Earl Hill and Vesta Parton King, and husband of the late Virginia Young King. In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by one daughter, Deborah Catherine King; one sister, Thelma King DeHart and two brothers Johnny King and Eugene King.

Thomas “Tom” Edward Beck 70, better known as “Poppy” passed away at home on August 23, 2016. 

Poppy was born and raised in Cherokee, NC. During his life he worked for the CAP Program, BDO, Cherokee Boys Club, Assistant Director of Save the Children Federation, and he was a member of the local JayCee’s. 

Etta Mae Mashburn Waldroup was born May 15, 1926 to the late Berry and Cardelia Grant Mashburn, and went home to be with the Lord on Friday August 26, 2016. She was married to Harold Waldroup on March 28, 1943. Harold was a Baptist Minister and pastored seven churches in Swain, Jackson and Macon Counties. Etta Mae was faithful to support him through the 46 years they were married. Harold died in the pulpit at Holly Springs Baptist Church on October 22, 1989. Later in life Etta Mae met Floyd Martin and they were married for five years. Floyd died October 14th, 2014.

Betty Jean (Honeycutt) Feamster, 77, of Tuckasegee died Saturday, August 27, 2016.

The funeral will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 3 at Appalachian Funeral Services chapel, 165 Skyland Dr., Sylva, NC with Rev. Jeff Powell officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour  prior to the service at the funeral home.  A private family burial service will be conducted in Tuckasegee.

Lyle Edwards, born January 27, 1934 to the late Cora Lee Bowers and Marion Edwards went home to his Lord and Savior on August 25, 2016.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Gwen Thomas and Betty Jean Earls and his son, Billy Edwards; and his stepfather, Bobby Bowers; three brothers, Bill E., Nelson J., Keith B. and one sister, Alda M.

He is survived by his brother, Arvile Bowers; and two sisters, Helen Woodard (Wade) and Judith Parris (Eual Ray).

Alta Downs, 77, of Bryson City passed away Saturday, August 27, 2016 at her residence.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Dolly Parris Jenkins; two children, Dennis Downs and Vicky Beck; great grandchild, Mason Todd West; and her brother, Garl Jenkins.

Vincent Virgil Thomasson, 83, of Bryson City passed away Saturday, August 27, 2016 at his residence. A native of West Virginia, he was the son of the late Harvey Thomasson and Bertha Bumgarner and husband of the late Olive Jane Thomasson. He was a US Army Veteran having served in the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Ray Thomasson and his sisters, Thelma Wiggins and Wilma Sedleck.

James Colin Jenkins, 63, of Bear Cove Circle, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, August 18, 2016. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Robert Glenn and Delthia Lequire Jenkins. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister Gerene Messer.

He was a member of Franklin Grove Baptist Church. Colin was a Jouneyman Diesel Mechanic with Continental Trail Ways in Charlotte, NC for 12 years, and then worked for the Swain County School system as a Transportation Supervisor until his retirement in 2013.

Donna Cummings, 67, of Bryson City, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, August 18, 2016. A native of Orange County, NY and longtime resident of Swain County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Mable Benfield Cummings, and wife of the late Richard Conrad Oldenquist.

She is survived by one son, Richard Oldenquist of Bryson City; one sister Judy Cummings of Bryson City; one brother Robert Cummings of Hollis, NH; one niece Leah and a nephew Lucas.

No services are planned at this time.

Zell Cookston, 87, of Bryson City and former resident of Hildebran, NC went home to be with the Lord Saturday, August 20, 2016. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Sam and Beulah Forrester Cookston. He was a US Navy Veteran.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Candler and Cromwell Cookston; sisters, Maggie Bell Slocum, Evelyn Swain and Tiny Smith; and his sons, Danny and Daryl Cookston.
