Jerry “Dale” Seay, Sr. age 48 of Talking Rock passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at his home

He was born in North Carolina to Jerry and Evelyn Seay.

Mildred (Toby) Oliver, 78, of the Alarka Community went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday May 7, 2019. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Grover and Lovenia Oliver. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

She is survived by one daughter, Norma Jean Oliver of Bryson City; one brother, Leonard Oliver of FL; several nieces and nephews and extended family.

A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.

Crisp Funeral Home is assisting the family.

On May 7, 2019, Dorothy Janette Munsey Shepherd, 77, went to her heavenly reward after a life of faith and family and a period of declining health.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Ruth Shepherd and three brothers, Billy, Harold and Steve Shepherd, all of Chattanooga, TN, and her youngest daughter, Chrystal (Christy) Wynee Munsey King of Bryson City.

Gordon William Hughes, 84, of Sylva, NC died Saturday, May 11, 2019, at his residence. A native of Ashtabula, Ohio, he had lived in NC since 1995.

He was a son of the late Ermann Leyton and Ethel Hamrick Hughes.

He is survived by his wife, Lesley Ruth Fink Hughes, a brother, Kenneth L. Hughes (Patty), a sister, Norma Jean Davis all of Ashtabula, OH, and brother-in-law David Fink.

Gordon owned the Harbor Insurance Agency in Ashtabula, Ohio. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Bonnie Mashburn Seay, 81, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Friday, May 10, 2019. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Leason Frank and Mary Stiles Mashburn and wife of the late Ernest Seay, Jr.

She is survived by her two daughters, Susan Seay and Donna Cochran of Bryson City; grandchildren, Hayley Maney of Charleston, SC, Raylyn, Thomas, Vincent, and Zachery Crouse all of Bryson City; two sisters, Dorothy Cochran of Bryson City, Peggy Ammons of Murphy; and her brother, Larry Mashburn of Bryson City.

Albin Richard Brostic passed away Sunday, May 5, 2019. 

He loved the mountains and was an avid fly fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Paul Brostic.

Surviving are his wife, Rose Brostic of Bryson City and son, Mark Brostic of Sylva.

No services are planned at this time.

Wanda Winchester, 57, of Bryson City, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, May 4, 2019. A native of Georgia and longtime resident of Bryson City she was the daughter of Wade Mason of Bryson City and the late Lucille Mason.

In addition to her father, she is also survived by one daughter, Angelina Winchester; one son, Tyler S. Taylor and loved one Jaelisa Caldwell; nine grandchildren, Darius, Damian, Tylina, Taylor, Kalina, Kaden, Shalina, Simeon, Karlie; two great grandchildren, Kaius, and Nalayah; one brother; five sisters, and a lot of extended family.

Virginia Estes Karlen passed away May 2, 2019 in York Pennsylvania.

Born on May 31, 1944 in Swain County NC; she was the daughter of the late Ben and Annie Sue Estes of Whittier, NC.

She took early retirement after serving many years as head of the payroll department for the Goddard Space Administration in Maryland.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Karlen of Shrewsbury, PA; two brothers, Carroll Estes of Whittier, and Johnnie Estes of Granbury Texas; two sisters, Jane Brabson of Asheville, NC and Linda Slate of Newland NC.

Gail Irene Day Bateman, 76, of Andrews passed away Sunday, May 5, 2019.

A graveside memorial service was held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, May 8, 2019 in Valleytown Cemetery in Andrews.

Gwendolyn (Bobbie) Jones, 90, of Bryson City, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, May 4, 2019. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Nathan and Bertha Lindsey Cochran.

She was preceded in death by her husband Grady Jones and her son Jake Jones.

She was a member of Patterson Chapel Baptist Church.

She is survived by three children, Frank Jones and wife Rita, Myrtle Birchfield and husband Zeke, and Rachael Jones; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren, and a sister Marie Nations.

Ella Mae Rowland, 69, of Whittier went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 1, 2019. A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Elbert and Bernell Jones Carter and wife of the late Allen Dale Rowland.

She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, James Crisp and wife Alicia; granddaughter, Autumn; step son, Jamie Rowland; step grandchildren, Caleb and Coy Rowland; brothers, William, Albert and James; and sisters, Rachel and Betty.

AIKEN, SC – James Walter Welch, 90, beloved husband of Ann Thomas Welch, died suddenly, Sunday, May 5, 2019 at his residence.

A native of Bryson City, NC, James was a son of the late Lee and Beulah Lakey Welch. 

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart.  He retired from DuPont at the Savannah River Plant in 1986 as a Supervisor in the FB-Line.  James was a member of First Baptist Church, Bryson City, NC, where they planned to retire.  

Agnes Lucile Ingram Mason, 83, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Sunday, April 28, 2019 at her residence. A native of Farrell , GA, she was the daughter of the late Marvin and Eula Ayers Ingram. She was a church going girl who will be loved and missed by everyone who ever met her.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Roscoe Floyd Ingram and Edward Eugene Ingram

1935 - 2019

 

Gastonia – Eva Nell Cochran Taylor Summey, 83 gained her Angel wings on April 17, 2019 surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Bryson City, NC on August 8, 1935 to the late Dave and Caroline Smith Cochran.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband’s George Taylor and Charles Summey; her siblings, Archie, Jerry and Pat; 

Children, Lonnie, Rabbit, Michael, Carolyn Funderburk and Peanut Bolin;

3 grandchildren; sons-in-laws, Henry Rogers and Ronnie Funderburk,

Ronnie Dale Barker, 67, of the Alarka community was called home to be with the Lord on April 22, 2019.  Ronnie was born to Troy and Jessie Barker on March 7, 1952 on Unahala Creek in the Alarka Community. Ronnie served proudly in the United States Marine Corps and held several public service jobs throughout his life, always striving to help those in need while providing for his family. 

Ronnie was preceded in death by his parents Troy and Jessie Barker, sisters Wanda Jenkins and Mildred Woodard, brothers Fred Barker, Doyle Barker, Arville Barker, and Winfred Barker.
