Obituaries

Gladys Jones Oliver, age 86, of Redding, California, passed on peacefully on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at a Jackson County Hospital. 

A native of Swain County, Gladys was the daughter of the late John H. and Fannie B. Jones and wife of the late William Roy Oliver, who passed in 2003. Gladys was a 1950 graduate of Swain County High School. Gladys spent most of her adult life as a loyal and loving wife and mother living in Redding.

Laurence (Larry) Banks Williams, 63, of Bryson City, NC passed away on June 3, 2017 in his home.

Larry was born in Tampa, Florida on August 16, 1953. He is the son of Joan Saunders and the late George Williams.

Larry was a Florida State University graduate working in hospitality management for 39 years.

Larry enjoyed socializing and entertaining anyone and everyone with his outgoing personality, quick wit, and smile. He was an avid FSU football fan, NASCAR fan, and loved to discuss his political views.

Sherrille Grace Julian Compain passed away on Saturday, June 10 at the age of 71 after a brief and unexpected illness. She left a wonderful legacy.

Sherrille had a lifetime dedication to the belief that knowledge is a cherished gift with the power to transform lives. She put that believe to work formally as a teacher in Georgia public schools at Brantley County High School (Nahunta) and Northside Middle School (Warner Robins). She was even lured out of retirement to serve as a substitute teacher in the Swain County School system by a local friend.

Clarence Edwin Reeves, 93, of Bryson City, NC passed away on June 9, 2017. He was born November 25, 1923 in Swain County, NC to the late Daisy Blanton Reeves and Marvin Reeves.  

Mr. Reeves was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church in Bryson City and was a veteran who served his country during WWII in the Navy.  Clarence enjoyed woodworking and he always had a smile.

John Edward Parton, 60, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 7, 2017.

 He was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Bonnie Parton of Bryson City; his sister, Barbara of Tennessee; and his first wife, Laura Colville.

Margie Jean Collins Millsaps, 70, of the Roundhill Community went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, June 6, 2017. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late John Marion and Minnie Etta Cochran Collins. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by four sisters, Alva Marie Collins, Grace Millsaps, Louise Collins, Geraldine Hardy; one grandson, David Ledford; and one great grandson, Ridge Cochran.

She attended Galbreath Creek Baptist Church.

Kenneth Eugene Stephenson, age 78, formerly of the Grassy Branch Community of Bryson City, North Carolina, passed away peacefully into the presence of our Lord at 12:15 am May 26, 2017.

Clifford McClain “Mack” Sutton, age 89, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 2, 2017.  Mr. Sutton was born February 4, 1928 in Jackson County, NC. He was the son of the late Walter and Lila (Turpin) Sutton.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by 3 sisters; Mary Audrey Sutton Buchanan, Alma Jean Sutton Pullium, and Rebecca Lucille Sutton Lambert as well as 2 brothers; Beauford Hayes Sutton and Perry Daniel Sutton.   

Bradley Taylor Hutchison, infant son of Zeb James Hutchison and Alta Nicole Fortner of Bryson City, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday May 30, 2017.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Larry and Sharon Hutchison; maternal great grandmother, Lenore Hyde and an aunt, Michelle Hutchison.

Lola Mae Long Bryson, 93, passed away peacefully at her home on the hill on Tuesday, May 30, 2017.

She was the daughter of Gustavus and Betty Jane Sutton Long. She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters; and her husband of 52 years, Paul James Bryson.

 She is survived by two daughters, Betsy Rae Kirby and husband Roger of Granite Falls and Judy Paulette Bryson Quinn and husband Rick Quinn of Leicester.

 

Thomas L. Smith, 69, passed away at the Bailey Center for Caring in St. Augustine, FL on May 22, 2017, surrounded by his loved ones.

 Some of his hobbies are to include playing guitar, singing, reading, family, crossword puzzles, feeding natures animals, and traveling. Some of his accomplishments include being the Chief of military Police NAS Key west, FL, Combat Pistol Expert, and a police academy graduate.

Thomas is preceded in death by his parents Guy Malcom Smith and Margaret Merle Taylor and brother, Terry Webb.

Eva Nell Golden Ball Fredell, 95, of Hickory, passed away Friday, May 19, 2017 at Catawba Regional Hospice.

Born January 29, 1922 in Swain County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Mack and Cora Nell Duvall Golden.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Henry Fredell; two brothers: Adam and Bobby Golden; and 2 sisters: Lilly G. Cook and Mary Ruth Grant.

Sherry Shuler Watson, 61, of Lugoff, SC, formerly of Spartanburg entered eternal rest on May 18, 2017.

Dwight C. Armstrong, Jr. 69, of Whittier joined his late wife, Judy on May 17, 2017. A native of Miami, FL, he was the son of the late Dwight and Mary Armstrong. He was a US Army Veteran having served in the Vietnam War. Dwight was a registered nurse at Swain County Hospital for over 15 years

He was preceded in death by his brother, Greg and his sister, Marsha.

He is survived by his children, Steve, Josh, Ryan, Jesse and Ashely; grandchildren, Zachery, Alexis, Cameron and Caden; and several nieces and nephews.

Heath “Ty” Oocumma, 41, of Cherokee passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at the Cherokee Indian Hospital. 

Ty was a fluent Cherokee speaker, former member of Birdtown Crossing drum group, former member of Warriors of AniKituhwa, former employee of the Cherokee Fire Department, and former supervisor of DBLO Enterprises, L.L.C.
