Linda Jean Wayman Wernsing, age 62, passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2016. She was the daughter of Dr. Robert M. Wayman and Frances Wayman of Bryson City, NC.

She is survived by her loving husband, John Wernsing, son John and Mine Wernsing, a grandson Michael, and a daughter Lauren and her fiancé J.C. Gallegos, whom Linda adored.

Surviving also are sisters Sandra Wayman, Carol Wayman Tait, Judith Wayman Ackerman, son Brett, and her daughter Holly, and brother David Wayman, his wife Adonna and sons Eric, Mark and Brian as well as many extended family members.

Charles Anderson Bradshaw, 85, of Whittier, NC, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016, while surrounded by loved ones, following a period of declining health. 

He was born February 28, 1931 in Crockett, TX to Lee and Ella Mae (Johnson) Bradshaw. 

At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Marine Corps where he proudly served during the Korean Conflict. For his time served he received many medals and honors, including the Korean Freedom Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1951.

Albert David (Al) Vaughn, 77, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, September 27, 2016. He was owner and operator of Vaughns Tree Service for 50 years, which will continue to operate as per his wishes.

Vergie Shook DeHart  passed away on October 2, 2016 at the age of 93.  Vergie was born October 14, 1922 to the late Rufus and Mamie Stalcup Shook.    She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph William DeHart, two brothers, Robert and Charles; sisters, Faye Hutchins, Lucille Pennington, Ruth Watson, Aileen Livingston, Jean Almond and Margaret Breedlove.

Vergie is survived by her sons Ralph L. DeHart (companion Kathy Long) and C. Michael DeHart (Beverly); six grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and sisters, Lillian Hipps, Carolyn Green and Marie Green.

Willard Wallace Martin, Sr., 90, of Raleigh, NC passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2016. A private memorial service will be held Saturday, October 8 in Asheville, North Carolina. He was born in Swain County, North Carolina to the late Willard and Sarah Martin.

Brigette H. Shankles, 71, of Hixson died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016, at her home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ruby Hensley.

She was employed for many years by Buster Brown Apparel and other sewing and textile industries.

Mrs. Shankles loved her plants and flowers. She enjoyed sewing and cooking.

Mrs. Shankles took great pleasure in entertaining and socializing with friends.

High Point – Ruth Maurlene Wilson Tabor passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2016, at Hospice Home of High Point.  She was surrounded by her loved ones and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.  We are all richer by having her presence in our lives and will miss her and her jolly, boisterous laughter.

Reverend Lelon W. Greene of the Alarka Community passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 21 while camping at Hiawassee, Georgia on Lake Chatuge. He has been a Baptist Minister for over 55 years, Pastoring Mt. Vernon Free Will Baptist Church, Balsam Grove Free Will Baptist Church on Caney Fork and Conley’s Creek Free Will Baptist Church which was his first and last to Pastor when he resigned July, 2015 due to his health. He was a faithful member to the Alarka Fire Department since it was organized. He was a Veteran of the United States Army.

Patricia Swan passed away Sunday September 25, 2016.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm Friday at St. Josephs Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Bryson City Cemetery.

Denise B. Howard passed away peacefully in Asheville Memorial Hospital on September 23rd in Asheville, NC at the age of 58.

Denise is survived by her husband, Dennis R. Howard. Her parents, Phillip and Jean Brooks. Her sibilings, Tonya Rochester and Phil Brooks. Her children, Brian Davis and Courtney Bolick. Her grandchildren, Reagan and Aiden. 

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, October 1st at 3pm at Whittier Church of God.  All are welcome to attend and celebrate Denise’s life.

 BROOKWOOD, AL – William Jack Duvall, age 73, (formerly of Bryson City, North Carolina) of Brookwood, Ala., died September 10, 2016. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frieda Hawkins Duvall; granddaughter, Ashley Nychole Wade; sister, Betty Jo Calhoun; and parents, Alcie Frisby and William Perry Duvall.

Reverend Robert E. Sherrill, 87, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Friday, September 2, 2016. 

A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Munday Alexander and Ethel Louise Wilson Sherrill and was raised by his late grandparents, Rev. Joseph and Sarah Wilson. He graduated from Swain High School in 1947. 

He was a retired Air Force veteran having served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars and received the Bronze Star as well as numerous awards. He was a Southern Baptist minister for 35 years. He was a loving husband and father.

Robert James Ebert passed away Thursday, September 15, after a brief illness. He is survived by his beloved partner Ann, Children Ben (Louise), Linda, Tammy (David), and Suzie (Garrett), Ann’s children Kathleen, Steven, Beth (Mike), 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and many friends. Bob was born March 10, 1936, in Flint Michigan and at age 17 joined the U.S. Army. He served nearly 10 years in the Engineer Corp with tours in Korea, Okinawa, and Germany.

He was preceded in death by his wonderful wife of 47 years Venita, his parents and a sister Shirley.

Marian Catherine “Cathy” Cook, 75, of Bryson City passed away Friday, September 16, 2016. Born January 4, 1941 on Alarka, she was the daughter of the late Wilma J. Chavis and Carl Cochrane.

She was preceded in death by her son, David Westmoreland in 1994 and her husband Albert Cook in 1982.

She is survived by her son, Stephen Renzi (Nycole); brothers, Raymond Marr (Leigh), Charles and Harvey Marr. Neices, Tammy Marr Stein, Kristina Marr Prince, great niece, Ashley Rae Wilkinson (Justin), great nephew, Joshua Stein and Travis Clark (Lidia).

Claude Jackson Monteith, 88, of the Jackson Line Community, passed away, Wednesday, September 14, 2016. A native of Gaston County and longtime resident of Swain County, he was the son of the late J.H. and Isabell Christopher Monteith. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a grandson David M. Monteith Jr.

He was a faithful member of the Bryson City First Baptist Church.
