Philip “Pops” Balin, 72, of Bryson City passed peacefully on August 14, 2017 after a fearless battle with Parkinson’s disease and melanoma. Born April 6, 1945 in Indianapolis, Phil grew up in Toledo, Ohio before serving in both the Army and Air Force Reserves. He spent much of his professional career in traveling sales, while he and his devoted wife of 49 years, Joyce (Hir) Balin, raised their two rambunctious boys in Marietta, Georgia. In 2001, the loving couple settled down on pristine Fontana Lake where Phil was an avid fisherman and brilliantly gifted woodturning artisan.

Eloise Cline (Smith) Hicks, 80, of Whittier, peacefully went home to be with the Lord, Monday, August 21, 2017. A longtime resident of Swain and Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Dewey and step-mother Myrtle Cline. In addition to Dewey and Myrtle, she was also preceded in death by her mother who passed away when she was two years old, Thelma Cline; her first husband, Jarrett Smith; second husband, Cecil Hicks; one son, Eric Smith; two brothers, Bobby Cline, and Joe Billy Cline; three sisters, Vivian Felker, Marcella Brock, and Romona Hyatt.

Mae Cottrell passed away due to a fall and Alzheimers on August 7, 2017. She was born to Burrell and Joyce Cochran Woodard on June 20, 1938 in Swain County.

She lived most of her life in Burkeville, VA. She loved her family, friends and reading.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands Troy Watkins, Howard Cottrell, brother John B. Woodard, niece Cynthia Joyce Woodard.

Delano Woodard, 66, of the Alarka community passed peacefully on Monday, August 14, 2017.

He is survived by his girls, Jean Carson, daughter, Lynn Millsap, granddaughter, Lily Grace Millsap; his boy, Nick Millsap and Tippy Millsap; two sisters, Nonnivee Watkins (Harold Ammons), Theresa Wright (Richard), three brothers, R.B. Woodard (Joan), Gentry Woodard (Jill Gregory), Morris Woodard (Sandra); Extended family, Cindy Woodard, Lonnie, Logan, Luke, and Lawson Woodard; Carla, Travis, Kobe, Kiana, Jon and Ace Stephenson.

 

 

Vera Eunice Wiggins of Whittier passed away at home, surrounded by her loving family, on Monday, August 7, 2017. 

Eunice was born in Rutherford County on May 20, 1921 to parents Ethel Carroll Mathis and Levi Jefferson Mathis. She lived with her family in a number of Jackson County communities, including Caney Fork and Wilmot. 

On January 20, 1942 she married James Charlie “Bud” Wiggins and they settled in Whittier. Eunice worked at CJ Harris hospital for a number of years before retiring in 1988. 

Charles Glenn Parlier of Cornelius, NC passed away July 12, 2017. 

Charles “Chuck” was born December 18, 1940 in Brevard, NC. He was raised on Conley’s Creek in Whittier. 

He was preceded in death by his mother Ethel Gibson Parlier, father Glenn Robert Parlier and infant son Darryl Parlier. 

Charlotte - Nancy Monteith Black, 80, of Charlotte, North Carolina died Friday, July 29, 2017. 

Born in Natural Bridge, Virginia on June 27, 1937. She was a daughter of the late Charles B. and Lillie Cabe Monteith, Nancy attended school in Bryson City, North Carolina and Chester, South Carolina.        

Tony Lee Nations passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 20 at the age of 63. Tony and wife Karen were in Fairbanks, Alaska visiting their son Matt and his family. 

Tony is survived by wife Karen of Charlotte, NC, daughter LeeAnne of Charlotte, NC and son Matthew and daughter-in-law Kari of Fairbanks, AK, as well as one grandson, Thailor of Charlotte, NC and three granddaughters, Sierra, Katie and Savana of Fairbanks, AK.

Leslie Shook, 78, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord at 1:50 am Friday, July 14, 2017 after a short stay at the Elizabeth House Hospice Center in Flat Rock. 

A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Ira Edwin and Ella Mae Bradley Shook. He attended Deep Creek Baptist Church when his health allowed. He worked most of his life in Nuclear Power and was most proud of his law enforcement career in Swain County. Along with his wife, he was owner of Village Grocery on Soco in Cherokee for 17 years.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Alexander Hardy Buckland, 26, died Monday, July 10, 2017. He wasn’t born in North Carolina but his heart and soul were here.

He is survived by his mother and step dad, Tonya and Dale Larymore; brother, Andrew and wife Jessica and their children, Zoey Buckland; sister, Whitney and husband Gary and their children Kaitlyn, Chloe, Trenton and Andrew Kent.

His friends knew him as Big Al,because of the size of his heart.

His mother says, “He was her heart, was the youngest child and had the biggest heart and loved everyone.”

Ethel M. Lambert, 101, of the Birdtown community went home to be with the Lord Thursday, July 13, 2017. A native of Cherokee, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Marinda McCoy Murphy and wife of the late Willard Lambert.

She was a member of Bethabara Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirlene McCoy and two sons, Robert and Willard (Bill) Lambert.

Jeffrey Neil Crisp went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 15th.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ann Plott Crisp and James H.“Bud” Crisp.  He is survived by his two sons, Zachary Crisp and Lennon Crisp, both of the home; a brother, Michael David Crisp and wife Deborah of Bryson City; an uncle, Tom Plott and wife Judith of Hendersonville, and many cousins and friends.  

He was a resident of Haywood County for most of his life.  

A memorial service is planned for a later date.

It is with sadness we announce that Sally Jo Summitt, passed away on June 3, 2017 in Sylva, NC after a brief battle with cancer.

A native of Tennessee, Sally then lived in Alexandria, VA, Tallahassee, FL and Baton Rouge, LA.  She also lived for many years in Mountain View, AR taking care of her Father and Mother (Joe and Vivian Summitt) and spending many good times with her “Sisters” on the square and at the library.  She left Mountain View after the passing of her parents and lived her remaining years in Bryson City, NC.

Jessie Ross-Swimmer, 75, of the Big Cove Community went home to be with the Lord Monday, July 3, 2017.

She was preceded in death by her parents, McKinley Ross and Lillie Mae Wahnetah and step father, John Wahnetah; and her brother, Bob Ross.

She was a member of Yellowhill Baptist Church. She was a God fearing woman, a loving sister, aunt, mother, and friend.
