Justin Moultrie Weeks, 28, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Monday, February 19, 2018 at his residence. A lifelong resident of Swain County, he was the son of Donald and JoDee Carroll Weeks. He was saved at Holly Springs Baptist Church when he was 10 years old.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by three siblings, Justine Raylyn Weeks, Jedidiah Everett Weeks, and Jewel Phoebe Weeks; and his good friends, Stephen Nathan Ashe and Boyd Lambert, Jr.

Cline Winchester, 82, of Bryson City, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, February 15, 2018. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Florence Winchester.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Maxine Winchester; one son, John Winchester and wife Brona of Bryson City; two grandchildren, Jonah Winchester and wife Morgan of Waynesville, NC, and Jasmine Winchester of Asheville, NC; one great grandchild, Adeline Winchester of Waynesville, NC, and a special niece, Louise Goss of Waynesville, NC.

Greg Olsen, 78, of Bryson City, passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at the VA Hospital in Asheville following an extended illness. He was born in Royal Oak, Michigan and is the son of the late Edward C. & Geraldine H. (Fuller) Olsen.

Greg served in the US Air Force from 1957-1966 and was stationed in the Philippines along with serving three tours in Vietnam.

Asheville - The Children of Marvin Ernest Shuler and Faye Shuler Lawhon - sadly announce the passing of their father Marvin Ernest Shuler on December 23rd, 2017 at Aston Park Health Care Center. 

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents William “Dutch” Ernest Shuler and Venice “Vinnie” Smiley Shuler. 

Ronald Kimsey Proctor, 68, of Bryson City passed away Saturday, February 10, 2018. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Olin and Emma Proctor.

He was preceded in death by a brother, McKinley and a sister, Hilda Fuller.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marcella Proctor; son, Scott Proctor; daughter, Leann Arch; several grandchildren; sister, Cleo Taylor (Ed); and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held at 2:00 pm Wednesday at Fred Cochran Cemetery.

Virginia A. DeBord went home to be with her savior and Lord and many loved ones on Feb 9th at her home in Bryson City. She is survived by her husband Martin DeBord, by her daughter Karen Crisp Torda and her husband Mike Torda, by her son Greg Crisp, his wife Sarah DeHart Crisp, their daughter Tiffany Crisp Walker, her husband Charles Walker and their children Isabella, Henry, Jacob, and Dakota.

Loretta Shook Cline, 83, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 24, 2018. Loretta was born in Bushnell, NC to the late Joseph and Thelma Crisp Shook. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Gwin.

William P. Hyde (Bill) of Winston Salem died Sunday, January 28th, at his home where he had been in declining health for some time. Friends in Bryson City who were so important to him, knew him as “Stub.” He is survived by his wife Shirley and son Skeeter, a sister Christine, and three nephews, Mark, Bill and Chris.

C.W. (Strawberry) Ogle, 83, of Whittier, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, February 4, 2018 at his residence. A native of Whittier, he was the son of the late Bill Ogle and Essie Raby Ogle Dillard. He was a member of the Oconee Masonic Lodge # 427 in Bryson City where he served as treasurer. He was a member and deacon of Whittier Baptist Church. He was also a US Army Veteran having served in the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Ogle was preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa Ogle; and his brother, J.T. Ogle.

Ronald Edward Douthit, 69, of Bryson City, passed away Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 5:05am at Maggie Valley Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Swain County. He was the son of the late Paul Douthit and Beatrice Montieth. Ronnie, whom was retired at the time of his passing, worked for the Great Smoky Mountain National Parks. He was and ever shall be an avid Outdoorsman. 

Taylor Kirkland, born December 6th, 1933, passed away January 25th, 2018 at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. 

Surviving is Verna Marie Wiggins Kirkland, mother of their two children. Daughter Carolyn Marine Kirkland is from Alarka, son Wayne Taylor Kirkland and wife Terry Lynn lives in Murphy, NC. Grandchildren, Brandie Nichole and husband Imade Agus Mahardie of Bali, Indonesia and Bryson City, NC; Grandson Justin Taylor and wife Tonieeta Kirkland of Whittier, NC. Great grandchildren Putu Bailey and Made Korey Mahardika. Shelly Taylor and Davis Cooper Kirkland. 

Barbara Ann Truett Monteith, age 83, of Atlanta (Dekalb), GA., died Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at her home after a 30 year battle with cancer. 

Born in Bryson City, NC, she was a member of Northeast Baptist Church for over 49 years where she was very active including teaching Sunday School, was a choir member, youth leader and music teacher. She was a retired elementary school teacher in Tucson, AZ., Pheonix, AZ. and Beaumont, TX. 

Nell Ledford Rogers, 90, passed away in Hiawassee, Georgia on January 20, 2018. 

Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Truett Memorial First Baptist Church, Hayesville.

William “Bill” Jackson Haigler, 71, of Cherokee passed away Monday, January 22, 2018 at Valley View Nursing Center in Andrews.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley McMahan Haigler; Brothers, Larry Haigler (Wife Melba), Frank Haigler, Tommy Haigler (Wife Rose Marie), Ronnie Haigler, and Norman Eugene Haigler (Wife Pam); one sister, Lou; and his special dog Ruby.

Bill was preceded in death by his parent, Donald Haigler and Cora McLeymore Haigler; three brothers, Leroy, Ed, and Robert Haigler; one sister, Betty Haigler.

Blanche Monteith, 86, a long-time resident of Bryson City, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening January 27, 2018.

Ms. Monteith was born in 1941 to the late Clifford and Martha Lou Gunter Monteith, in Western North Carolina. She was also preceded in death by her brother Robert Monteith, sister Cosette Monteith, and sister Claudine Parramore.
