Obituaries

Jeffrey Neil Crisp went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 15th.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ann Plott Crisp and James H.“Bud” Crisp.  He is survived by his two sons, Zachary Crisp and Lennon Crisp, both of the home; a brother, Michael David Crisp and wife Deborah of Bryson City; an uncle, Tom Plott and wife Judith of Hendersonville, and many cousins and friends.  

He was a resident of Haywood County for most of his life.  

A memorial service is planned for a later date.

It is with sadness we announce that Sally Jo Summitt, passed away on June 3, 2017 in Sylva, NC after a brief battle with cancer.

A native of Tennessee, Sally then lived in Alexandria, VA, Tallahassee, FL and Baton Rouge, LA.  She also lived for many years in Mountain View, AR taking care of her Father and Mother (Joe and Vivian Summitt) and spending many good times with her “Sisters” on the square and at the library.  She left Mountain View after the passing of her parents and lived her remaining years in Bryson City, NC.

Jessie Ross-Swimmer, 75, of the Big Cove Community went home to be with the Lord Monday, July 3, 2017.

She was preceded in death by her parents, McKinley Ross and Lillie Mae Wahnetah and step father, John Wahnetah; and her brother, Bob Ross.

She was a member of Yellowhill Baptist Church. She was a God fearing woman, a loving sister, aunt, mother, and friend.

Fred Lequire, 88, of the Alarka Community, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, July 5, 2017. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Glen and Maye Burrell Lequire. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by one sister, Aileen DeHart, and four brothers, Estes, Lester, Wayne and Glen Ray Lequire.

Fred was an active member of Mt. Vernon Freewill Baptist Church until he became ill. He was an ordained Minister. Fred was a Construction worker for many years, and was also a Korean War Veteran.

Elizabeth Ann (Pan) Gass Bryson, 84, of Whittier, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, June 30, 2017 with her family by her side. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Marshall and Lillian Blankenship Gass, and wife of the late Jack Dempsey Bryson, who passed away in 1986. In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by one sister Wanda Sue Harris, and three brothers, Billy, Buddy, and Junior Gass.

Maggie Warren, 86, of Bryson City, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, July 3, 2017. A native of Swain County she was the daughter of the late Bob and Vishia Huskey McGaha, and wife of the late Clifford H. Warren. In addition to her husband and parents she was also preceded in death by one son Robert Clifton Warren.

Maggie served as the Register of Deeds for Swain County for 28 years and was a lifelong Democrat. Her proudest accomplishment was serving as the Veterans Service Officer for Swain County for several years.

Bud Watkins, 70, of Bryson City passed away Monday, July 3, 2017. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Grady and Birdell Johnson Watkins. Bud was a roofer in Swain County for 55 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Bud was preceded in death by his children, Kevin Watkins and Essie Watkins; brother, Raymond Watkins and his sister, Lena Stroupe.

Angela Marie, 60, of Bryson City, passed away Saturday, June 24, 2017, at Mission Hospital, Memorial Campus, after suffering a sudden illness.

Rose Marie Brady Crisp, 64, of Cherokee passed away Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Mission Hospital in Asheville. A native of Cherokee, she was the daughter of the late Arthur (Poss) and Betty Jackson Brady.

She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Glenn Crisp; her son, Lenny Crisp of Cherokee; two sisters, Nancy Brady and Susie Brady and companion Vernon Rathbone of Cherokee; and two brothers, Thad Brady and wife Katherine of Stillwater, OK and Jim Brady and companion Tracy Wise of Cherokee; her aunt, Sarah Ben Walkingstick; and many nieces and nephews.

Bernice Cabe Davis, 92, of Bryson City, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 24, 2017. A native of Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Dorothy and Thomas Cabe. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William G. Davis and son, Thomas C. Davis; three sisters, Nellie Henson, Lassie Ward, Myrtle Lowery; two brothers, Roy Cabe and Harold Cabe.

Gabriel Armand Zazueta, 39, of Bryson City, NC passed away on Friday, June 9th at home. Formerly of Tampa, FL, his birthplace, and Ocala, FL, Gabriel is survived by his mother, Marcella Dolan of Bryson City, NC; his father, Danny Zazueta of Oakley, CA; his grandmother, Dora Zazueta of Walnut Creek CA; his sister, Julie Zazueta Abrams of Burbank, CA; and his brother, Walter Zazueta of Brentwood, CA. Gabriel leaves behind two beautiful sons, Elijah Zazueta/Owens 15 of Sarasota, FL, and Douglas Zazueta 8 of Ocala, FL; and a girlfriend of 10 years, Toni Wilcox of Ocala, FL.

 

Peggy Cathey Woodard, 60, passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at Mission Hospital.  

Peggy was born in Buncombe County and was the daughter of the late Clarence and Mary Wiggins Cathey.  She attended Swain County High School and excelled in athletics.  Her favorite sports were basketball and softball.  She held a basketball record at the school for many years.  Peggy enjoyed golfing, hiking, camping and traveling and was also a fan of the Carolina Panthers and NASCAR.  She was of the Baptist faith.

 

 

Mathew D. Nations, 29, of Sylva, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 15, 2017. 

A native of Swain County, he was born on June 15, 1988 to his parents Roy Joe Nations, and Judy Ball Mullen both of Bryson City.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Ralph Joe Nations, Mary Willis Greene, and Samuel Lee Metcalf.

Mrs. Mary Lee Quigley, age 70, of Thomaston Ga, went home to be with the Lord on June 17, 2017 at the age of 70. 

She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Dr. James P. Quigley; five children, Bobbi Lee (Bill) Bennett of Whittier N.C, Tony (Sandra) Morgan of Leesburg, Va, Tami (Bill) Hale of Athens, Ga, Jim (Tricia) Quigley of Springfield, Ga and Shaun (Erin) Quigley of Locust Grove, Ga. 

Lee is also survived by her siblings; James Navin of Aiken, S.C. and Debra Brooks of Sylva, N.C. and 14 grandchildren. 

 

L. Virgil Schenck, Jr., 92, of Cocoa, FL, went to be with the Lord and his beloved wife, on Sunday, June 18, 2017 at his summer home in Bryson City. 

A native of Greensboro, NC he was a son of the Luther Virgil Schenck, Sr. and Martha Dreher Schenck. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Thompson Schenck who passed away on June 23, 2016; son, Charles Daniel Dreher Schenck; sister, Martha Chamblee; and brothers: Jeremiah Dreher Schenck, and Jay Ernest Schenck.
