Martha Stewart Carter
Asheboro – Martha Stewart Carter, 98, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 29, 2019 at Cross Road Retirement Community.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, April 7, 2019 at Cross Road Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with Reverend Bernie Ramond officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Carter was born February 8, 1921 in Vicksburg, IN to the late William Bleackley Stewart and the late Jean Christie Stewart.
As a child, her parents moved to Osprey, FL and was raised on the Palmer Estate where her father served as grounds keeper.
She married Carlie Lee Carter, Jr. on July 20, 1941, and in 1961 they moved their family to Oxford, NC. While members at Oxford Baptist Church, she was active with the children’s Sunbeams program, and during her time at Delrano Baptist Church, she participated with the food preparation for the Wednesday night meals. Mrs. Carter was a member of Oxford’s Garden Club and Women’s Club.
The Carters divided their time between Oxford and a mountain residence in Bryson City. During the summers in Bryson City, she would spend her time volunteering with the Catholic Church Thrift Store. Most of all, Mrs. Carter was proud of her 100% Scottish heritage.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Betty Stewart Stockton, and also her husband of 62 years, Lee Carter.
She is survived by her two sons Robert Lee Carter, Sr. and wife Connie Tant Carter of Chattanooga, TN and William David Carter and wife Linda Hames Carter of Asheboro, NC; two grandchildren, Robert Lee Carter, Jr. of Chattanooga, TN and Amy Carter Draughn and husband Lee Draughn of Cary, NC; two great grandchildren, Jacob Lee Draughn and Emma Lynn Draughn, both of Cary; three nieces and three nephews; and best friends Barbara and Gilbert Wilson of Oxford, NC.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at the church, prior to the service.
