Richard J. Shepherd died peacefully in his home on Sunday the 9th of April, 2017 in Cape Canaveral, FL at the age of 76. Richard is survived by his wife, Judy, his daughter Tracy McFadden and his son, Joe Shepherd.

Born in Brownsville, PA, he moved to Kissimmee, FL in 1957 and soon thereafter joined the United States Navy, serving four years as a Photographer’s Mate.  In 1962, he met Judy Albritton and in 1963, they married.  Richard had an impressive 30+ year career as a photographer and columnist with the Orlando Sentinel (aka Osceola Sun and Osceola Sentinel), retiring in 1995.  Richard and Judy then moved to Bryson City, NC until 2016, when they permanently relocated to Cape Canaveral, FL.  Richard enriched the Osceola County community through countless hours of service as a volunteer for several social services agencies and also by raising funds for numerous worthwhile organizations.  Over his 30-year career, he documented life in Osceola County, recording and capturing in pictures its transformation from a “cow town” to the more urban community it is today.  Richard enjoyed golf, tennis and every moment he could spend with his family.

A celebration of Richard’s life was held Thursday the 13th of April at Northeast Christian Church, 2885 Partin Settlement Road, Kissimmee, FL 34744.  All were welcome to attend, share a memory and celebrate Richard’s life.  Brief remarks were given at noon, and then lunch was served while others share their memories of Richard.  The US Navy Color Guard sounded Taps and presented Judy the flag around 1:30 p.m.  Please dress casually.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Richard’s memory to The Opportunity Center, Inc. (aka Osceola ARC).  Visit or send donations to 310 N. Clyde Avenue, Kissimmee, FL 34741.
