At last week’s season opener for basketball, Swain took on the Smoky Mountain Mustangs.

Varsity boys ran away with the game by the end of the four quarters with a finishing score of 92-66 starting things off on the right lead for Swain.

The Devils kept things pretty neck and neck in the first quarter ending it with 23-21, with Smoky Mountain in a slight lead but they turned things up in the second quarter with 26 points for Swain and only four for the Mustangs.

In the third and fourth quarter, points were more closely aligned with 22 for Swain and 18 for the Mustangs and in the fourth 23 for Swain and 21 for Smoky Mountain, but Swain’s second quarter domination put them far ahead, ending the game with a 26-point win.

Unfortunately, varsity girls were unable to pull off a win against the Mustangs and finished with a 58-25 loss. The game stayed close until after the half and then Swain seemed to lose steam while the Mustangs powered through.

In the third quarter Swain scored a devastating zero points, and the Mustangs got 17 points just in the third quarter.

Savana Smith scored seven points in the game, Maddie Spates six, Arizona Blankenship five, Mazie Helpman four, and Kiersten Smith three points.

Both JV teams were victorious in the season opener.

The next basketball game will be Friday, Dec. 3 with JV girls first, followed by JV boys, varsity girls, and varsity boys.
