Maroon Devils drop to Hayesville, beat Braves
The Swain County Maroon Devils varsity basketball team faced Hayesville in an away game on Tuesday, February 5. The game got off to a slow scoring start for the Maroon Devils, and despite a close match, the final was 70-62 with Hayesville Yellowjackets taking the win.
Maroon Devils senior Bradley Vestal led with 22 points. Senior Gaige Southards and sophomore Noel Wolf landed the only three-point shots for the Devils with 3 and 1, respectively.
Swain traveled to Cherokee on Friday, February 1 and took the win against the Cherokee Braves 71-58.
The teams were closely matched in the first half, scoring point for point and ending the half 20-18. The Maroon Devils pulled away in the final quarter, meeting the net for 25 points and sealing the lead against the Braves.
For the Devils, senior Bradley Vestal led scoring with 21 points, followed by seniors Gaige Southards and Hunter Call with 15 points each. Senior Jesse Waldroup netted 12 points.
The Maroon Devils are now 6-14 overall and 3-7 in conference.
The Devils will host Murphy on Friday for Senior Night. Regular season rounds out Tuesday, Feb. 12 at Robbinsville and the Smoky Mountain Conference will be hosted by Robbinsville beginning Thursday, Feb. 14.
