Maroon Devils ended the year strong with several games and a tournament last week. The teams played a conference game against Hayesville on Dec. 21 and a non-conference game on Dec. 23 against Smoky Mountain and three tournaments during the Maroon Devil Christmas Classic.

The conference game with the Hayesville Yellow Jackets, ended with a disappointing loss of 68-57 but the Devils got it together for the game against Smoky Mountain with a 84-62 win.

The week after Christmas, during winter break for students, Swain hosted the Maroon Devil Christmas Classic where teams all over the western region came to compete in a tournament at Swain High School.

The first game of the tournament, on Dec. 28 was against Brevard and the Devils pulled off a seven-point win over the Blue Devils with a final score of 67-60. The team battled it out scoring back and forth for the entire game, but the Devils seemed to kick into high gear for the final half, earning every point of their win.

Highest scoring players for the game were Carter Kirkland and Cooper Hyatt with an impressive 19 points each and Isaiah Collins with 17 points. Carter Kirkland and Isaiah Collins both had three assists, Cameron Blankenship and Charlie Collins had two, and Donnavin Groenewold, Joshua Collins, and Cooper Hyatt had one each.

On the second day of the classic, the Devils suffered an 86-58 loss against Hayesville on the final day of the Christmas Classic, Swain put a beating on Smoky Mountain, 72-59.

Friday’s game against Cherokee is rescheduled to Jan. 12 with boys starting at 6 p.m. The game at A.C. Reynolds is now varsity only.
