The Swain County High School track team finished their conference season this past Wednesday at the Smoky Mountain Conference Track Championships held at Cherokee. Both the boys and girls teams finished 2nd place in the conference behind Murphy High School.

The boy’s team efforts were highlighted by Ryan Jenkins, who won the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:55 seconds, shattering the previous conference record of 10:14 set in 2009 by Tyler Breedlove of Hayesville. This time was a personal best for Ryan and the third fastest 3200 time in the state for the 1A classification this season.

The boys team had three other All Conference finishers. Trey Bowman won the 110 meter hurdles while also recording a second place finish in the 4x400 relay. Nick Millsaps won the discus with a throw of 136’11” in very dramatic fashion. Nick fouled on his first two attempts and managed to notch the winning throw on his third and final attempt of the day. Jessie Waldroup won the pole vault with a vault of 12’6”, continuing the Swain County boys’ domination of this event over the past several seasons.

The girls team managed one individual champion on the day. Jessie Lohman finished 1st in both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. She won both events in dominating fashion leading from start to finish. She also notched conference runner-up finishes in both the 4x400 and 4x200 meter relays.

Jessie was also Swain’s only female athlete to win medals in four different events. Gaige Southards medaled in four events for the boys team with top three finishes in the 100, 200, 400 and 4x400 Relay. Kyndall Cochran, Trey Bowman and Bradley Vestal all finished the meet with three medals.

The Maroon Devil Track team will now turn their attention to the Regional Championships to be held at Lenoir Rhyne University on Saturday, May 11. With both the boys and girls teams ranked in the top 8 in the state, they are expected to put several athletes through to the state meet.

The Lady Devils will welcome back Monica Riordan for regionals. Monica is currently ranked #2 in the state in both the 100 and 300 hurdles. She broke the school record in the 100 hurdles at a meet held April 24th at Cherokee High School with a time of 15.24, eclipsing the previous mark of 15.87 set by Joule Breedlove Lowman in 2006.
