The 2022 West vs. Midwest 1A All-Star Basketball Games and Banquet held at Highlands High School on Saturday, March 19, was successful. The banquet had over 200 in attendance to hear Commission Que Tucker of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association speak with the Executive Director of the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association, Greg Grantham, in attendance. In addition, the All-Stars were honored with framed certificates and T-shirts.

The girls’ games provided excitement from the tip-off to the final buzzer. The West girls won 71-48, with Yeika Jimenez of Robbinsville High school being selected as the Most Valuable Player. The West boys won a thriller in overtime by 98-95, with Sam Bradford of Hiwassee Dam High School being selected as the Most Valuable Player.

This year there were 11 scholarships of $250 presented to the All-Stars.

The coaches who their peers selected included: Brett Lamb, West Girls Coach; Susie Shelton, Midwest Girls Coach; Brandon Young, Midwest Girls Coach; Allison Phillips, Midwest Girls Coach; Hank Newsom, Midwest Boys Coach; Scott Harrill, Midwest Boys Coach; Aaron Hogner, West Boys Coach; and Scotty McMahan, West Boys Coach.

Thank you to Brett Lamb for serving as the host as the Highlands High School and community provided a location that delivered the very best accommodations for the banquet and the games.

Next year, the games and banquet will be held at a Midwest high school. The “Super Saturday” date will be one week after the state basketball games in March 2023.
