State Rep. Mike Clampitt secured the Republican nomination Tuesday for the North Carolina House of Representatives District 119 seat, defeating two challengers.
With all five Swain County precincts reporting, Clampitt earned 872 votes, or 60.43%. Anna Ferguson received 510 votes (35.34%), while Mike Yow finished with 61 votes (4.23%). District wide, Clampitt received 4,484 votes to runner up Anna Ferguson’s 2,964 votes.
In the Democratic primary for Swain County Board of Commissioners chairman, Jeramy Shuler won with 639 votes, or 67.91%, defeating Edward Larry Simonds, who garnered 302 votes (32.09%).
Four Republicans competed for their party’s nomination for the chairperson’s seat on the board of commissioners. Robert Robbie Brown led the field with 510 votes (35.69%), followed by Bobby Jenkins with 443 votes (31.00%) and Courtney (Wilde) Dills with 348 votes (24.35%). Eugene Shuler dropped from the primary race, but since his name remained on the ballot, he received 128 votes (8.96%).
In the Democratic primary for two seats on the Swain County Board of Commissioners, Erika Smith received 667 votes (42.32%) and Chris Reed collected 541 votes (34.33%), finishing ahead of Bradley Hall, who had 368 votes (23.35%). The top two vote-getters advance to the general election.
On the Republican side of that race, Jason Jay Kirkland led with 1,081 votes (44.41%). Lisa Stevenson Barker followed with 721 votes (29.62%), and Phil Carson received 632 votes (25.97%). The top two advance.
In the Republican primary for Swain County Board of Education, Lisa (Stoltzfus) Loftis topped the field with 983 votes (41.56%), followed by Jason Lambert with 728 votes (30.78%) and Josh Oliver with 654 votes (27.65%). The top two move on to the general election.
For Swain County sheriff, David Southards won the Democratic nomination with 656 votes (71.46%), defeating Douglas (Tank) Anthony, who received 262 votes (28.54%).
In the Republican sheriff’s primary, Brian E. Kirkland won by a landslide with 1,279 votes (87.42%), compared with 184 votes (12.58%) for Wayne Dover.
