Four structure fires sparked by a passing storm kept firefighters busy Wednesday morning, with crews responding to multiple calls within an hour.
Bryson City Fire Department Chief Charles Bryson said, “Our department responded to four weather related structure fires this morning when the storm front moved through between 7 and 8 a.m.”
The first call came as an automatic aid response to assist the Cherokee Fire Department at 102 Bob Owle Road in the Bird Town community. While crews were enroute, dispatch reported a second fire in the attic of a nearby home.
“These fires were brought under control and as Bryson City units were leaving the scene the third fire was reported at 460 Sam Davis Road,” Bryson said. “As the first apparatus was pulling up to the scene at that residence, dispatch advised of another fire at 710 Sam Davis Road.”
The department also responded to two brush fires at 101 Watson Hollow and Balltown Road Saturday.
West Swain Fire Deptartment responded to another fire on Licklog Road this afternoon.
Firefighters from Bryson City, Alarka, West Swain, Cherokee and Qualla responded to the incidents, while Sylva and Savannah fire departments provided coverage for additional calls.
“Moderate damage was caused to all four structures with lightning from the storm being the cause,” Bryson said.
“Thanks to all responding agencies for their support,” he said.
