Over a recent weekend, my fiance' and I traveled the one hour drive from Bryson City to Dry Falls in Highlands. We went through Franklin and followed the winding road to Highlands for about 13 miles, eventually coming to Dry Falls on the right side of the road.
When we reached the parking area, there were no spots and several cars were already in line waiting. The spots opened up surprisingly fast and we slid the $3 fee to park in the dropbox.
Making our way toward the crowded staircase we slid past visitors waiting at the top and made our way down the mountain. Once you round the bend, you see it: the 75 foot tall waterfall cascading off the rocks.
The trail was slightly crowded with people stopped on the sides taking photos and others walking back up the mountain. Walking behind the falls you feel the spray off the cool water and hear the enormous force of water. It’s so loud, it’s hard to talk to someone right next to you while you're underneath it.
As you walk through the trail around to the other side of the falls, you see the magical rainbow at the bottom, glistening up from the water and sunlight mixture. It’s breathtaking.
If you haven’t got a chance to witness this hidden gem of the Smokies, plan your trip soon, so you can explore this beauty, as well as downtown Highlands with cool shops and restaurants. Be sure to stop by Kilwins for an ice cream or sweet treat!
