The NCHSAA Individual Wrestling State Tournament was held this past Saturday at Greensboro Coliseum. The Maroon Devils placed 4th overall as a team for 1A with 70 points, behind Avery County in first with 196, Robbinsville in second with 134, and Uwharrie Charter in third with 114.

The Devils had five wrestlers who placed in the top 4 of their weight divisions.

The individual placers were Adam Cotterman in third placed for the 138 pound weight class, Gabe Lillard in fourth in the 170lb class, Blake Sain in third for 195lb, Carson Taylor in 2nd place for 220lb, and Kohlton Neadeau in third for the 285lb weight class.

Swain’s Carson Taylor finished in the highest place for the team, just behind Robbinsville’s Ben Wachacha in first for the 220lb weight division.

Taylor won in a tie-breaker period one over Avery County’s Grayson Hoilman making the score TB-1 5-4. Ben Wachacha got high points after a win by fall over by Starmount’s Steven Sullivan with a 15-5 score, which landed him in first.

Swain County High School had a great 2021-22 wrestling season and Head Coach Adam Jaimez is proud of the team, thankful to fellow coaches, parents, and participants!
