Indoor track teams compete at Polk

Polk County – Saturday the Swain Indoor Track teams traveled to Polk County to participate in the WNC Championships.  It also served as the last meet before this week’s event at Cherokee, where athletes will have their final chance to qualify for the State Championships.  The Lady Devils finished 7th out of 17 teams at the event.

It was a great showing by our Lady Devils. Monica Riordan, placed 2nd in the 55m Hurdles, Natalie Stuckey finished 2nd in the Shot put, Jenna Marr, finished 3rd in the Pole Vault, Gracie Monteith finished 3rd in the 1000 (huge PR in the event as well), Ericka Wachacha finished 5th in the high jump, Amelia Rogers finished 7th in the pole vault, Emily Ulaner finished with a PR in the 300, Janet Villagomez hit a PR in the 300, Katie Simonds hit in the 55 m dash, Lauryn Linton hit a PR in the 1000, our girls 4×200 (Monica, Janet, Emily, and Jenna) finished 4th, just missing a state time by .64 of a second, and the 4×800 team (Amelia, Gracie, Emily, and Lauryn) finished 6th.

The Maroon Devils boys team came in with only 4 athletes, but each of them competed. Matthew Gray placed 6th in the triple jump and 5th in the pole vault, Landon Matz set 2 PR’s yesterday in the 55M dash and the 300 m run where he also placed 7th, Jaxon McClung set a huge PR in the 1000m run, and Ben Payne set a PR in the shot put.
