The Lady Devils softball team beat the Asheville Trailblazers in a 13-2 win on Monday, March 27 as they played at home, and then won again in a 14-4 conference match at home on Tuesday, March 28, playing the Hayesville Yellow Jackets.

“It was a good win for us,” said Head Coach Toby Burrell of Monday’s game by email. “I was happy to see our bats start to come around. Our top of the order had a solid game.  Kiersten [Smith], despite still learning as a slapper, got on base three times and scored twice.  Kaley [Parker] was 3-4 and scored 3 times, while Carley [Teesateskie] was 4-4 and drove in a pair of runs.  Maddie [Spates] walked twice and scored both times and Rylee [Rawls] was 3-4 and had 5 RBI on the day.”

On Tuesday, light rain began just as the game was starting. Crowds huddled under umbrellas and hoodies to watch the two teams go at it.

The game saw Hayesville scoring four runs in the first half hour to lead Swain’s zero. Swain began to hit their stride in the bottom of the second, scoring six runs after that to take the lead.

Kennedy Anthony scored first, doubling off the left centerfield fence, while Kandyce Crisp walked and Haileigh Woodard reached on an error. That loaded the bases – and from there the players began to maneuver their ways home, with Woodard and Shuler advancing after a wild pitch and then another wild pitch helping Parker home.

Teesateskie roped a double to left field and helped Shuler and Smith to get home and tie the game at that point.

Later in the game, Rawls got her first career home run. The bases were loaded by the Devils soon after that again. Teesateskie got her own first career home run – a three run shot to center field.

Anthony scored after drawing a walk, advancing to third on a single from Crisp. Anthony got to home after a ground out by Woodard, giving the Devils their final point, ending the game 14-4 in favor of the Lady Devils.

Spates’ record for the day was 3-3, scoring once and driving in a run. Teesateskie was 2-4 with a home run and two RBI, and Rawls had a home run and two rbi.

Rawls’ pitching saw a complete game – she scattered 10 hits, walked zero and struck out seven.

As of press time, the Lady Devils were scheduled to play Hayesville again on Friday, March 31, in an away conference game.
