Maroon Devil soccer has back-to-back wins

On Wednesday, Sept. 17 the Maroon Devils hosted the Hayesville Yellow Jackets. The Devils came out on top with a 4-2 win over the Yellow Jackets.

Freshman Homer Lawless had two goals on the night and the other two goals came from Edwin Lezama and Brendan Lanning. Evan Hall assisted one goal and Edwin Lezama assisted another goal.

On the defensive half, Brendan Lanning had nine steals, Max Wilmot and Wyatt Outlaw had eight steals. Matthew Evans had six saves in goal. Player of the game is Homer Lawless.

On Monday, Sept. 23, the Devils traveled to Cherokee for a 4:30 p.m. game. The Devils started off quickly with Clayton Shuler scoring off a pass from Yuriel De La Cruz at the 37-minute mark. From then, the Devils started rolling in the first half. At 31-minute mark Evan Hall would receive a ball from Brendan Lanning and dribble past the Braves defense to score.

A few minutes later, Clayton Shuler found Evan Hall again for his second goal of the night. Evan Hall wasn’t done yet; He would assist Homer Lawless for his goal on the night. Hall would finish the night with a hat trick off a corner sent in by Wyatt Outlaw. To end the night of scoring, Maclane Whorton would chip a shot past the Braves keeper. Clayton Shuler assisted the goal.

Brendan Lanning had 11 steals on the night and Wyatt Outlaw had eight steals. Matthew Evans had 3 saves and Port Sontheimer had 2 saves on the night.

The Devils’ strong defense kept the Braves scoreless. Player of the game was Maclance Whorton.

“ I believe our team is finding a good connection with our possession game,” said Coach Kyndall Cochran. “We keep improving and touching up the weaknesses. Coming off these two games, the coaches have seen the team execute the playing style we have been working on in practice.”

In a highly-anticipated match-up, the Devils took on Highlands on Monday night with the game concluding in a tie. As of Tuesday, the Devils are second in the Smoky Mountain Conference and have a conference record of 4-1-1.

The Devils took on Tri-County Wednesday night at home (after press time). The team will compete against Murphy on Monday for a conference game.
