On Wednesday, Dec. 22, Swain County High School hosted five schools in the Devil Duals wrestling tournament. The team went 4-1 for the day but lost in the championship round to the Robbinsville Black Knights.

Swain County scored 37-36 against Enka, 78-6 Hayesville, 78-6 TC Roberson, 66-15 Pisgah, and fell 53-21 to Robbinsville.

Coach Adam Jaimez said the team continues to grow and make a name for themselves in the program.

“We wrestled really well on the day and lost to a tough bunch from Robbinsville. We’ve made a lot of growth and we are continuing to grow and find out who we are as a program. We wrestled a lot of great teams on the day, I mean that’s the only way to get better is by wrestling other great Programs,” Coach Jaimez said.

He also thanked other schools for joining in at the tournament.

“We would like to thank those programs for making the trip over to us. It’s a big deal when other schools want to come to an event you are hosting with, they could go to other places to wrestle,” he added. “I would like to thank our administration, AD’s, our local community businesses, and our parents for making the day so smooth and special. I’m proud of our coaches for coaching hard and loving our kids. I’m proud of our kids for continuing to believe in the vision we have for this Program.”

The Osley B. Saunooke tournament scheduled for Jan. 1, was canceled due to Covid protocols by Cherokee High School, but the team’s next match was Tuesday, Jan. 4, at home for Senior Night, hosting Union County and Murphy. Results will be available in next week’s edition of the Smoky Mountain Times.
