On Thursday, March 17, the Swain Maroon Devils hosted their home meet at Cherokee High School with 15 teams across western North Carolina.

 

Results for the Lady Devils

Amelia Clough was 12th with 14.43 and Allie Gibson was 16th with 14.71 in the 100-meter dash, Sienna Hackshaw was 4th in the 400-meter dash with 1:06.61 and Amaya Hicks was 2nd with 2:34.32 in the 800 meter. Arizona Blankenship was first with 5:35.82 and Gracie Monteith was 2nd with 6:14.73 in the 1600-meter run. Blankenship was also first in the 3200-meter run with 11:56.11 and Lauryn Linton was 3rd with 14:09.04. In the 100-meter hurdles Briana Ridanpa was 10th with 20.48 and Melani Linton 12th with 20.58. The girl’s relay team was 4th in the 4x100 meter relay with 56.33, 2nd in the 4x200 with 1:55.66, and 1st in the 4x800 with 10:26.35. For high jump, Julie Smith was 4th, Erika Wachacha was 8th, and Lindley Wyatt was 10th. For long jump, Isabella Walker was 12th and Amelia Clough was 15th. Walker was 6th for triple jump. Amelia Rogers was first for pole vault, Laiken Harvey was 3rd, Alden Thomas was 4th, and Hannah Wingate was 6th. For discus, Hannah Brown was 8th, Layla Alonza 22nd, Emma McCoy 24th, and Kaiya Vestal 28th. In shot put, Brown was 15th, Emmy Everhardt 26th, and Sarabeth Sutton 27th.

Coach Ian Roper said he was proud of the team’s performance on Thursday.

“I felt that we competed very well on both the boys and the girls side. Unfortunately, we were not able to field our teams at full strength due to the necessity of moving the meet to Thursday due to weather. We have a lot of kids that play baseball, softball and soccer on our roster who were not able to participate,” Coach Roper said.

In the 100-meter dash, Josiah Glaspie was 9th with 11.86, Jackson Pittard 32nd with 12.65, Darius Saunooke 34th with 12.70, and Keyanthae Graham 35th with 12.71. In the 400-meter dash, Kane Jones was 10th with 56.07, Joryn Walker 13th with 56.92, Daniel Nations 16th with 58.69, Keyanthae Graham 22nd with 1:00.01, and Sawyer Cochran 23rd with 1:00.84. Brown was first in the 800-meter with 2:10.36, followed by Max Wilmot in 27th with 2:48.65, and Kory Ledford in 30th with 2:51.21. Connor Brown was also first in the 1600 meter run with 4:49.07, Connor Lambert was 18th with 5:28.13, Corey Wolf was 21st with 5:31.43, and Max Wilmot 38th with 6:24.71. Abhi Patel was 5th in the 3200-meter with 11:37.22 and Wolf 10th with 12:25.27. For the 300-meter hurdles, Josiah Glaspie was 6th with 48.31, Darius Saunooke 10th with 49.83, Jackson Pittard 12th with 51.04, and Kelan McCullough 16th with 52.92.

The boys track team was 2nd in the 4x100 relay with 47.04, 6th in the 4x200 with 1:39.83, and first in the 4x800 meter relay with 8:57.06.

Dawson Cody was 4th in high jump and for long jump, Kelan McCullough was 2nd, Cody 11th, and Isaiah Collins 12th. For triple jump, Cody was 2nd, Isaiah Collins 3rd, Matthew Gray 6th, and Josh Collins 11th. Gray was first in pole vault, followed by Owen Craig in 4th. Nathan Bogdanowicz was 9th, Braylon James was 12th, and Ben Payne was 17th in discus. In shot put, Isaiah Collins was 12th, Connor Driver 24th, and Bogdanowicz was 25th.

“We had several highlights, including dominant performances by both the boys and girls 4x800 relay teams to begin the meet. Connor Brown who anchors the boys 4x800 relay team also had 1st place finishes in both the open 800 and the 1600,” Coach Roper said. “Arizona Blankenship won both the 1600 and 3200 as well as anchoring the girls 4x800. Swain pole vault won both the boys’ and girls’ events with Amelia Rogers (9’0) taking 1st for the girls and Matthew Gray setting both a meet and school record with a vault of 15’1. Aldon Thomas (8’0) and Owen Craig (10’6) both set personal best marks in pole vault. Overall, I am pleased with our performances, but we still have some work to do in order to be where we want to become championship season in May.”

Swain’s track team competed Wednesday at Robbinsville against Cherokee, Robbinsville, Hayesville, and Highlands and results will be available in next week’s paper. Their next meet will be Friday at FCA Relays at TC Roberson in Asheville.
