Swain takes first at track & field invitational

The Maroon Devil Track program hosted the Swain County High School Invitational this past week at Cherokee High School. The meet included the top programs from the Smoky Mountain Conference, as well as 3A power Franklin, Enka and Rosman. Both the boys and girls programs finished 1st overall out of the eight teams in attendance.

 

Lady Devils

On the girls’ side, the Maroon Devils took the top two spots in the High Jump with Gracie Sutton finishing 1st and Erika Wachacha 2nd. In Pole Vault, the Lady Devils took three of the top four spots. Amelia Rogers brought home top honors with Laiken Harvey and Hannah Wingate tying for 3rd. The Lady Devils won three of four relays, crossing first in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400. Swain took the top two spots in both the 800-meter run and 1600 meter run with Amaya Hicks taking top honors in the 800 followed by Arizona Blankenship. Blankenship finished first in the 1600 followed by Gracie Monteith. Monteith would also bring home a first-place finish in the 3200 meter run.

 

Maroon Devils

The Swain County boys’ team had three placers in Pole Vault, led by Matthew Gray’s 15’0 winning vault. Kelan McCullough and Lucas Sutton both also placed in pole vault. McCullough  placed 1st in Long Jump with a best jump of 20’0. This was the third meet in a row he has cleared the 20’ mark.

Swain also took home three of the top five places in triple jump, paced by Dawson Cody with a jump of 39’6. Josh Collins placed 2nd and Matthew Gray 5th. The boys 4x800 Relay team also brought home top honors on the day.

The Maroon Devils competed in the Smoky Mountain Conference Championships on Wednesday, May 4 (after press time).
