Staff Reports
Kevin Seagle has resigned as the chairman of the Swain County Board of Commissioners. His resignation is effective Aug. 31.
In a letter to fellow commissioners and Swain County Manager Lottie Barker, Seagle said it was with “a heavy heart but a clear conscience that I submit my resignation.”
Seagle said when he accepted the responsibility of serving as chairman, his focus was on the betterment of Swain County – making sound decisions, fostering healthy debate, and working together toward policies that improve the lives of Swain County residents.
“Unfortunately, the nature of our public discourse has shifted in recent months and years,” said Seagle. “Instead of engaging in constructive dialogue about county business, fiscal responsibility, infrastructure and the needs of our citizens, a growing portion of the public discussion has turned into personal attacks, unfounded accusations, and efforts to damage private livelihoods.”
Seagle said that while he remains committed to Swain County and its future, he believes that stepping down as chairman is in the best interest of restoring focus to the work at hand.
“This transition will encourage a renewed commitment to civil, solutions -focused governance,” said Seagle.
Elections director resigns
Adam Byrnes, elections director for Swain County, submitted his resignation effective Aug. 29. Byrnes said he is deeply honored to have served in his role. He will continue to work in North Carolina elections in his new capacity as the Ballot Processing and Audit Manager in Durham County.
