Military Veterans of Swain County remember the fallen on Memorial Day
The Military Veterans of Swain County helped residents and visitors remember what Memorial Day is truly about during a heartfelt remembrance ceremony at the memorial monument in front of the Swain County Visitor Center and Heritage Museum on Monday afternoon.
David DeHart, retired United States Army Sergeant Major and a Vietnam Combat Veteran, welcomed the public. Approximately 80 people of all ages were in attendance.
Thomas Womble, retired US Navy Commander, addressed attendees with a speech about the history of Memorial Day — A federal holiday to mourn and honor the nation’s deceased service men and women.
Originally called Decoration Day, a “Memorial Day Order” was issued by Grand Army of the Republic Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan in 1868.
The proclamation calls on all Americans “to observe Memorial Day by praying, according to their individual religious faith, for permanent peace.”
DeHart and Womble each paid special tribute to fallen Swain County soldiers.
“Scripture tells us that greater love is no more than this — to lay down one’s life for friends,” said Womble. “That is what Memorial Day is about. The festivals are great; the long weekend is appreciated; the beginning of summer is celebrated; and some of the sales are amazing. On this one day, we remember the cost of our nation’s continued existence.”
Jeff Marcum, US Navy, a Petty Officer First Class, continued in quoting Psalm 23: “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
Vaughn Benner, retired US Army chaplain, delivered the ceremony’s invocation and benediction.
Final roll call was delivered by Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge Ray Rose, senior chief petty officer.
Tyler Bennett and Abraham Palmer, Swain High School student, played the sounding of Taps.
Event marketing was handled by US Navy Capt. Cynthia Womble.
