Swain Academy students are making the most of their community adventures.

Recently, they had the opportunity to tour the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad and learn about the wide range of career paths it offers. After an engaging session exploring possible job certifications and future opportunities, excitement grew as it was time to board the train.

“One of my favorite parts of riding GSMR was getting to sing alone with the mysterious musician with the guitar and harmonica,” said Miguel Huerta, student.

The ride carried students from Bryson City, around scenic Fontana Lake and into the breathtaking Nantahala Gorge — an unforgettable experience filled with both learning and adventure.

Last Friday, they traveled to Oconaluftee Job Corps in Cherokee.

“The tour was very hands-on and showed us how important the classroom activities and job training are,” said Shandi Ward, student.

Students learned about HVAC, carpentry, nursing, etc.

“I liked the different trades offered and that we can live on campus,” said Shawn George, student.

Newfound confidence was instilled.

“For nursing certification, they make it impossible to fail and make sure you pass the classes and the exam,” said Kristiana Bullock, student.
