On Wednesday, Jan.19, the Swain County indoor track team traveled to Cherokee High School to compete against five other teams: Cherokee, Robbinsville, Murphy, Franklin, and Smoky Mountain.
Maroon Devils
The boys team finished 2nd in the meet, with 91 points. Franklin was first with 156 and Smoky Mountain third with 71.
In the boys 55 meter dash Landon Matz was in fourth with 6.80, followed by Jackson Pittard in 8th with 7.25, and Gavin Roland in 12th with 7.45, where just a few seconds can make the difference. In the 500 meter run Kane Jones was 1st with 1:14.22, while Connor Lambert was 1st in the 1000 meter iwth 3:09.06, with Jaxon McClung in 5th with 3:31.91 and Abhi Patel in 6th with 3:32.36. In the 1600 meter Spencer Roland was in 11th with 6:08 and Abhi Patel was 7th in the 3200 meter with 12:26.
In the 55 meter hurdles Austin Jenkins was 2nd with 8:45. Kelan McCullough was first in both the high and long jumps. Jackson Pittard was 7th in the long jump and Austin Jenkins was 1st, while Kelan McCullough 3rd in triple jump. Jackson Pittard was 4th in pole vault.
Lady Devils
The girls indoor track team finished 2nd, also behind Franklin. Franklin had 152, Swain County 87 and Robbinsville in third with 73 points.
Individual finishers in the 55 meter dash were Sienna Hackshaw in 4th with 8.04, Melani Linton in 6th with 8.17, Julie Smith in 10th with 8.50 and Karena Cline in 12th with 9.10. In the 300 meter Sienna Hackshaw was 2nd with 49.83 and Melani Linton was 5th with 53.03. In the 500 meter Lilah Foster was in 7th with 1:151.45 and Laiken Harvey was close behind in 8th with 1:56.40, while Katie Simonds finished 9th with 2:08.03.
In the 1000 meter run Gracie Monteith was 1st with 3:32.97 and Lily Bjerkness was in 5th with 4:01.03 and Josephine Parsons in 8th with 4:47.51. In the 1600 meter Arizona Blankenship was 1st with 5:25 and Lauryn Linton 7th with 7:50.
In the 55 meter hurdles Melani Linton was 5th, Alden Thomas was 6th, and Karena Cline was 7th. In high jump Julie Smith was first and Alden Thomas was 5th, and in long jump Isabella Walker was in 5th. For triple jump, Isabella Walker was third and in pole vault Ameila Rogers was 1st, Laiken Harvey in 3rd, Alden Thomas in 4th, and Hannah Wingate in 5th.
In shot put, Malla Bradley was in 6th, followed by Annasette Cooper in 7th, Sarabeth Sutton in 8th, and Sienna Hackshaw in 9th.
This Wednesday, the Maroon Devils indoor track team traveled to Cherokee once again, this time for the SMC Championship. Results will be available in next week’s paper.
