This week, the Swain County High School Maroon Devils varsity wrestling team took on Erwin, Owen, and Hendersonville at a match in Erwin.

Swain dominated Owen by 65-16 and Hendersonville by 63-12. Erwin put up a bit of a fight for the Devils, but Swain still managed to come out on top with a 45-33 win.

Swain was trailing in the beginning but after Israel Ferguson (160) and Cole Wikle (170) got pins, followed by a 7-1 decision by Gabe Lillard (182), put Swain back ahead.

The Devils didn’t get too comfortable in first place because Erwin won two matches and regained the lead. But, shortly after Carson Taylor (220) and Kohlton Neadeau (285) got pins in their matches, putting the Devils back in first place.

After Kale Stephenson (106) and Noah Rowe (113) received forfeit wins and Owen Craig’s (126) pin, Swain was back in first place to end the match with another win against Erwin.

“The team did really well at the meet and pulled out wins over all three teams participating,” Coach Adam Jamiez said. “We will compete on Tuesday at Hayesville and then again on Saturday in West Henderson.”
