Kernersville– It was a cold, early Saturday morning at Beeson Park in Kernersville, N.C.  In fact, at race time the mercury was still frozen at 28 degrees.  But that did not deter your Swain County Maroon Devils from running in the NCHSAA XC 1A State Championships.

Austin San Souci was the only Swain male to make the race, plus he was one of only 21 freshmen to run the race out of 147 runners. Austin placed 65th overall and 9th among the freshmen running.  His grit and determination was on display once again battling not only the cold but youth. He made a grand entrance on the state stage.

On the girls’ side, two more freshmen decided to make the field for our female team.  Gracie Monteith and Amelia Rogers continued strong seasons.  Their strength and fortitude shined brighter than the morning sun.  Out of 135 runners, Gracie and Ameila were among the few freshmen. Overall, Gracie placed 26th and Amelia placed 47th.

However, among freshmen, Gracie was 5th and Amelia was 10th. It was a great showing by Swain County XC runners.
