Jonas Trejo wins 2020 State 1A Championship

Greensboro – Swain’s Jonas Trejo won the NCHSAA 1A State Championship in the 126-pound weight class this past Saturday.  Trejo won three matches over 2 days to secure the championship.  In the first round he faced Austin Kennedy of Uwharrie Charter, who entered as the #4 seed in the East.  Trejo, who entered as the #1 seed in the West, pinned Kennedy to advance to the Championship Semi-finals.

In the semi-finals Trejo faced Jonah Hayes (49-9) from Avery County, who had advanced with a 8-5 decision over Brice Browning of Tarboro.  Trejo punched his ticket to the finals with a thrilling 7-6 win over Hayes.

The finals pitted the #1 seed from the East, Chandler Steel (32-6) from Chatham Charter, and the #1 seed from the West in Jonas Trejo (40-8).  Trejo recorded a pinfall at the 1:31 mark to take the title.

Swain’s Nate Brock finished as the NCHSAA State Runner-Up in the 138 pound weight class.  Brock defeated Elliot Sullivan (Neuse Charter) and Evan Wagoner (Alleghany) on his way to the finals.  In the finals Brock dropped a major decision to Nathan Fisher of Robbinsville.
