The Lady Devils beat the Hayesville Yellow Jackets in a 45-32 match on Thursday, Feb. 9, making it through the first round of the Smoky Mountain Conference Tournaments held in Andrews. The Swain girls traveled to Andrews again on Monday to face Cherokee but were defeated in a 72-46 blowout.

Swain coach Joshua Griffith could not be reached for comment.

Cherokee girls' varsity coach Ann Gardner said the game was “hard fought” as were the other two matches they’d played against the Lady Devils this season.

“We had good guard play,” she said. “All the way around, we played well. We were able to get the ball up in transition, we shot well in the three-point range.”

The Braves will face the winner of Tuesday night’s game against Murphy and Robbinsville (after press time).

“We’re taking the rest of the week to prepare,” she said. “We’ll work hard to get prepared.”
