Lady Devils open season with win over Lady Wildcats

The Lady Devils varsity basektball team got their season off to a solid start this past Friday with an impressive 73-31 win over visiting Andrews.  Swain raced out to an early lead and never looked back in winning their season opener.  It was a hot start for the Lady Devils who outscored Andrews 21-9 in the 1st quarter.

Sophomore Mazie Helpman took over to start the 3rd quarter for the Devils.  Helpman scored 16 of her game high 24 points in the 3rd quarter.  Freshman Amaya Hicks had an outstanding debut, the guard tossed in 10 points, but more impressively dished out a game high 7 assists.

Senior Ashton Younce did her usual job of filling up the stat sheet, as the forward finished with 7 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals an assist and a blocked shot.

Thirteen of the fifteen players who dressed scored in the contest for Swain, with all 15 seeing lots of playing time.

The Cherokee varsity basketball team won Tuesday’s home conference game against rival school Swain County by a score of 73-47.
