Lady Devils redeemed in Hayesville, Cherokee games

The Lady Devils soccer team hosted the Hayesville Yellow Jackets on Monday night in soccer action. The Lady Devils would enter the game hoping to end a two game losing streak. The Lady Devils would get on the scoreboard first 8 and a half minutes into the game when senior Kate Poss would find junior Mazie Helpman with a long ball. Fifteen seconds later, the Yellow Jackets would respond with a quick goal.

Eleven minutes into the game, junior Kaylee Simmons would score a goal off a pass from sophomore Tsini McCoy. One minute later Simmons would score another goal off a cross from Helpman.

Twenty minutes into the half, Simmons would assist Helpman on another goal. With 9 minutes left in the first half, junior Jadyn Perez would find Simmons for a hat trick in the game putting the Lady Devils up 5-1 at the half.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets would score 14 minutes into the second half off a free kick. Nineteen minutes into the second half, Perez would find Simmons for her 4th goal of the game. 15 minutes left in the game Junior Emily Ulaner would find Helpman for her third goal. Two minutes later, Simmons would find Helpman for her fourth goal of the game.

With two minutes left in the game, Poss would cap off the scoring with the final goal of the game putting the Lady Devils up 9-2.

“Overall, we played a good game. We have had a rocky start to our season with so many injuries, but the girls fought hard in this game,” said head coach Scott Cline. “I was proud of their effort in the game.”

On defense, Kate Poss led the way with 5 clears/steals. Senior Maddie Lay had 2 saves in goal.

The Player of the Game for the Devils was Simmons. “Kaylee played a great game and was very aggressive offensively,” said Cline. “She definitely picked the right time to take a shot and when to pass the ball for a teammate to score a goal.”

 

Cherokee game

The Lady Devils soccer team traveled to Cherokee for a game on Tuesday night to take on the Cherokee Braves. The Lady Devils would get on the board first seven minutes into the game when junior Mazie Helpman would find junior Kaylee Simmons for a goal.

With 17 minutes left in the half, Simmons would steal the ball at midfield and dribble to score her second goal of the game. With three minutes left in the half, the Braves would commit a handball in the box. Simmons would add her third goal of the game converting the penalty kick and giving Swain the 3-0 halftime lead.

Three minutes into the second half, Helpman would add a goal off a Simmons throw in. With 20 minutes left in the half, senior Maddie Lay would convert a penalty kick putting the Lady Devils up 5-0. Four minutes later, junior Jadyn Perez would score off another penalty kick,

The scoring would finish with five minutes left in the game when Simmons would add her 4th goal of the game off a pass from Lay. The Lady Devils would take the 7-0 win.

“We played a good game throughout. We were still short some players with only one sub and playing with ten on the field at times, but the girls battled hard all the way to the end., said coach Cline.

On defense, senior Kate Poss lead the way with 11 clears/steals. The Player of the Game for the Devils was junior Jadyn Perez.

“Jadyn really stepped it up in this game,” said Cline. “She has improved so much as a soccer player and is a major force in the center of the field.”

The next game for the Lady Devils will be Monday, when they travel to Murphy for a rematch with the Bulldogs, who beat the Lady Devils earlier in the season.
