The Lady Devils soccer team has racked up two more wins. On Thursday evening, March 21, they blanked the Tri-County Early College Lady Jaguars 9-0. Then, they were back at it Monday, March 25, beating the Murphy Bulldogs 1-0 at another home game.

At the Thursday game against Tri-County, Coach Scott Cline said the game started going so well that he began rotating players in and out of the field to try and get some players a chance to score goals who hadn’t had as many yet.

“It’s just for them,” he said, later adding that the game was “a great opportunity for us to play the whole team and try some players in different positions.”

The Lady Devils got a point in just the first few minutes of the game as sophomore Elli Norton found junior Mya Burrows-Kurr for a pass through traffic. Burrows-Kurr was able to convert it into a goal. Minutes later, Burrows-Kurr crossed the ball to sophomore Audrey Monteith, who got her first goal. More goals ensued and the game was 5-0 at halftime in favor of the Lady Devils.

The Lady Devils remained on the offense throughout, and even though the Lady Jaguars put up a robust defense, the ball stayed firmly on their side of the field.

In the second half of the game, the Lady Devils took numerous shots, weaving around the field and trying to get around the Lady Jaguars’ goalie, who was able to block several attempts.

The Lady Devils were able to keep scoring consistently, with one scored when Cline found junior Lola Collins and another when Cline found junior Gracie Sutton.

The game had a jovial air – when some players scored who don’t always get a chance to play as much, they erupted into congratulatory high-fives and hugs among their teammates.

When they got to nine points, with around five minutes remaining in the game, the game was called for the Lady Devils under the mercy rule.

Coach Cline said the player of the game was Burrows-Kurr.

“Mya did a great job both offensively and defensively,” he wrote. “I limit the players on the number of goals they can score in games like this. After she scored her first three, she played most of the rest of the game on defense. She did a great job back there also.”

The Lady Devils’ next game is an away game scheduled for tonight, Thursday, March 28, against the Hayesville Yellow Jackets.
